Struggling with layout of garage conversion

We recently had our garage converted into another room, but I'm really struggling with room layout. I think we're going to have this room as like a lounge area, sofa, TV and maybe a desk if there's enough room, but I'm struggling.

I have forever wanted an L-shape sofa so I thought we could have that in the corner by the window (so on the left hand side of this picture) and then a TV on the wall opposite (so right hand side of picture), but because of where the wall juts out slightly on the right hand side, I'm thinking the TV will just look like it's in an odd position if we put it on the anywhere near the bit that juts out - if that makes sense.

Anyway, I'm just hoping that you can give me some inspiration as to how you would plan out this room. I'm open to all suggestions to be honest. I like the idea of a second sort of lounge area, but I've also thought about an office space as well.

Hopefully this link works, I did a little video of the room.

It seems like you are expecting a lot from this room, which is quite long and narrow. Maybe by sharing your home's floorplan we could help advise in conjunction with the rest of the home?

That's a very good shape for a dining room but not great for much else.

Skiphopbump · 05/12/2022 19:47

I have the same shape garage conversion (without the wall jutting out near the window). I have a projector screen against the window which we only pull down when watching, an L-shape sofa facing the window and then a little office space (desk) behind the sofa. Works really well and love having a home cinema!

Perhaps it's the video or the picture, but it's not a whole lot smaller than our actual living room and we have plenty of room in there - 2 sofas, an armchair, TV. Here is the floor plan.

A large L shaped sofa is quite challenging in a long narrow room.

I would divide it into two spaces: a cosy, sitting area with TV plus a study space.

If you go onto Pinterest and search narrow sitting room layout you'll see lots of ideas.

If set on the L shaped sofa, I'd put it half way down facing towards the window so it forms a divide to the room, or place along the wall with the sticky out bit forming the divide halfway up the room.

Does that make sense? 😆

Here's one Pinterest find

Not a great diagram but hopefully explains what I mean!

This is what I meant by facing the sofa to the window

Just like what @Skiphopbump has done!

Ooh thank you so much, some great ideas here! Really like the idea of splitting the room. I never thought about having a sofa facing the window and the TV in front of the window, not sure why. The front of my house faces north pretty much, so doesn't get much sun.

Have you got a lounge ? What is the point on another one ?
Wouldn't you make it a room you needed or have a plan for it ?

Some people wish to boost the value of their home or appreciate the extra space, especially if they're a multi-generational household.

boboshmobo · 05/12/2022 20:22

Obvs I know that but converted our garage as part of an extension and made it a kitchen diner open plan space . It was designed with that in mind and created .

Was just wondering what they planned when they converted it , surely you have a plan ? I guess not 🤷‍♀️

I, too, would separate the room, possibly with an Ikea Kallax unit. Sofa on window side, Study on the other.

To be honest, this isn't the house I want to live in forever. One day in the next few years, I want to move, but while I'm here, I want to add on as much value as I can afford to do. I know garage conversions can increase the value by quite a bit more than they cost to put on a lot of times, and let's face it, garages are barely big enough to fit your car in, they just become a dumping ground. Rather put it to good use and increase the value of the house.

Plus I have 2 kids, so it would be nice to have a room to escape their noise every now and then... or for them to escape to, whichever works for me!

I have a few thoughts based on having a long narrow sitting room (6m x 3.3). We've got it separated into two areas where I have a desk and a sitting area. I didn't go with an l-shaped sofa because the width of the room would have meant climbing over it to get to everything because of the existing fireplace but I think you could do it.

I don't think you could have your tv against the window because it would be in front of the radiator.

If you want to disguise the stick out bit I'd get a carpenter to build a frame for your tv to sit with some storage around it, there's some ideas here.

What dimensions are you working with?

GatesToTown · 06/12/2022 16:20

Firstly, amazing video and floor plan which helps immensely.

I agree with splitting the room using furniture. I like what skip has done. I watch a lot of Alexandra Gater who is an interior designer based in Canada and they do over small rental apartments for clients.

I would use a low bookcase or a sofa back table/behind sofa table (both come up on google, so like a console table) behind the corner sofa back, somewhere to rest a cup of tea on break up the block of solid colour that is the back of the sofa. It can then have decorative items on, even a lamp if you use a battery operated light in it. I would use a white coloured black out roller blind that you can project onto rather than a tv all the time. My friend has done this in her home.

Get a nice tall lamp for one of the corners by the window and a plant to add some colour and texture. In the back half of the room on the left hand side from where you walk in have a desk against the wall and a rug too.
