Stairlift - best way to get rid

Hi all
Just moved into a house with a stairlift we want removed. I've called the supplier and council and they don't want it. It's over 7 years old but it's in full working order. Ideally I don't want to pay for removal and would prefer it get reused by someone in need! Any advice appreciated

It's it on a straight flight of stairs( straight rail) or does rail bend round any corners?
If it bends, it is bespoke to your house and will not have second hand value unless for a neighbour with exactly same stairs.
If it is straight it can be reused. Maybe see if any local companies sell reconditioned lifts and offer it to them free. Or advertise locally for free, and say buyer had to pay for removal.

It will likely cost more to remove than it's worth - and they are made to fit the stairs so unlikely someone can just take it out and reuse it - and you would have to know what you were doing to make it safe.

Stannah quoted some horrendous price just to remove one for a relative and it was only about a year old.

You might get some independent engineers/fitters who will remove for you for free (if they think they can use the parts) or for a small fee, but at 7 years old you're probably looking at the latter.

we’ve just moved into a property with one. DH removed it himself I don’t think it requires a specialist to dismantle just someone with the right tools and an extra pair of hands as it’s pretty heavy when you slide it off the track.

Was yours curved or straight?
What did you do with the parts?

Find a local independent mobility shop, they often sell reconditioned stairlifts, otherwise sell it or give it as scrap.

It was straight. It’s currently sat in the garage as DH has plans to pass it on. I suspect it will sit in the garage for the foreseeable before ending up in a skip.

Put it on Facebook marketplace and eBay for low start price with buyer to remove and collect.

dotdotdotdash · 04/12/2022 21:44

My friend sold his mum’s old one on eBay!

RoyFuckingKent · 04/12/2022 22:31

Mums went to the scrap man. Couldn’t give it away. A friend had the same issue with his mums as well.

Just sold one on FB marketplace. Didn't get much for it but it's up to them to remove it and take it away so I'm happy with that.

Porkchops22 · 04/12/2022 23:49

I also sold my dad's on Facebook marketplace for £200. It was a straight one. We removed it ourselves. East enough to do. It was laid in the hall until the buyer collected it.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 05/12/2022 00:58

I too sold my mum's old one on Ebay, I removed it myself, it wasn't difficult to do. Thinks it was about £300 10 years ago. It was a straight one though, as said before, curved ones are bespoke to the house and have no value.

How did you remove it?

DH and I took it out.
whether you can sell or not seems to depend on the design of the stairs. Straight ones are probably a bit easier to shift than curves.

I offered it on local Facebook groups, back to the company themselves, eBay, gumtree etc All for free. Extensive photos and videos of it working, the paperwork from its yearly service etc. I’d even removed it for anyone who wanted it. After three months we gave up and the scrap man came.

BabyPotato · 05/12/2022 10:45

Ooh we just had to deal with this too. I contacted the supplier and they wanted a stupid amount of money for removal because "it's a two man job". DH and I took it down in the end and it was fine. It was a bit fiddly and heavy, but perfectly doable. We had an electrician in the house while we were doing it and we double checked that it was ok for us to do it and ours was literally a case of unplugging it and then it was dead.

I got the local scrap man to collect most of it and the plastic parts we will just take to the tip. Ours was a relatively old curved (bespoke) one and no one wanted to buy it off us so off it went with the scrap man. 😁

How did you remove it?

Likely with just brute force. There's a video on youtube from a channel that I follow where it shows them removing an old stairlift - it was not an easy job.

The removal starts at 13:48
