Why, oh why am I not catching any mice?

I’ve been posting about the mice situation within my flat for nearly 6 months now. I’ve had two different pest control companies come round to set traps and ‘mouse proof’ the flat. There’s been traps and poison placed on the floor underneath the kickboards yet not one mice has ever been caught.

I’ve gone around the kitchen nearly 3 times and have filled all holes with wire wool. Yesterday I found another massive hole in the kitchen (absolutely no clue how I missed that) and filled it straight away. I finally thought okay, this will be the end of seeing any mice now. I also put two traps with bait underneath the kickboard right next to the massive hole that I’d found.

My younger sister was at my house earlier and said she saw a small mouse in the kitchen whilst I was outside. I just don’t understand, what the hell am I doing so wrong? I have 2 under 2 and this is starting to impact my mental health so badly. My anxiety is at an all time and I’m not sleeping anymore. I’ve baited the traps with chocolate, peanuts, peanut butter and bacon. I have snap traps and the electronic trap. Nothing is working, please help

Get a drum of cheap blue poison pellets from a local mini Market & a pack of own brand brillo type pads, find every hole where the mice are coming in rooms, put poison down the hole & fill the hole with the wire wool. Next go all around the outside of your property & find any loose pointing, holes for tv aerial or Sky cables & fill the holes with cement or expanding foam, if you have any long grass on your property cut it back. Clear all your cupboards out, get rid of crumbs, put things like rice, pasta, flour etc in tupperware type containers, clear crumbs from the bottom of your toaster, hoover up all floors daily so no food is left anywhere, empty your kitchen bin daily or make sure you have a bin that seals well. I had tried the expensive rat & mouse poison Rentokill brand, it was useless, the snap traps didn't work, I used the blue pellets & wire wool, I was mouse free within a week.

Where central heating pipes come through the floor is a big one where they get in, the other one for me was I had a walk in cupboard in my bedroom that went over the stairs & the little buggers ate through the wood. I was laid in bed one night watching television & kept on hearing noises, I thought it was the cables moving behind the television until a mouse ran along the skirting boards & the whole thing turned in to a giant game of Tom & Jerry.

I borrowed cat litter trays off neighbours as dont have a cat...that plus snap traps with peanut butter worked...we had mice for years...now still put the peppermint oil on cotton wool and leave around the kitchen....we were over run with mice one year....there is always one small hole you miss....get the torch and crawl all over the rooms they are in.

Thanks for all the comments guys! I had to take a break from the thread as this is starting to really bother me. I just want to live somewhere mouse free ffs!!

@HotChoxs I can access a laptop with Windows on it as I’m sure my sister has one. Please recommend me some apps to download if you know any good ones.

@wickedstepmothfker haha thank you😂 I’m in SW London and I’ll certainly borrow your cat if you’re local! My LL is a bastard, he couldn’t care less. Pest control found a massive hole in the wall and the LL only did something about it when I threatened to report the problem to environmental health

@GoAgainstNicki

I'll have a look for you. Bear with me.

From the MS app store I've tried webcam monitor. Free trial, it's £4.19 a month, you can try it out for a couple of hours. There's a free one called contacam but it's not on the appstore and I haven't tried it out.

For webcam monitor it's pretty self explanatory as there's a big 'start monitoring' button. It saves videos in the Documents/Webcam Monitor folder but you can change this.

The main thing is to check the sensitivity. Click the button next to 'When motion is detected and you'll see a slider. You want to test this by getting someone to roll a mouse sized sock along the floor in front of the camera to simulate the mouse movement. Adjust the slider downwards so it will pick something up of that size. You want to the camera to be as far out as possible to pick up a lot of the room but not too far that you won't pick up the mouse.

There's more to play about with but that should get you going. Feel free to post back if you need any help.

Well @HotChoxs you have made my day. I'm off work feeling terrible but have had a right old chuckle about your squirrel and the tank.

I know it's off topic for the thread (sorry OP) but why did you have a remote controlled tank up there in the first place? Were you expecting a squirrel invasion?!

Ha no, I bought the tank after I bought one of those things which was supposed to make a noise and drive the squirrel off and I didn't work. I kept opening the loft hatch when it came to scare it off but it came back. I was getting annoyed with the squirrel defying every move I made, it managed to pull out the wire wool I used to block the hole and made a right mess.

The battle tank idea came because I figured it would a)be more likely not to come back if it thought the loft was already taken and b) wanted to have some fun shooting the squirrel with some foam balls.

I know this an old thread but I have 2 under 3 and have an mice problem. Did you ever get rid of?

Glue traps are illegal due to their cruelty. I used to work in a pest control co. Also poisons should not be used as they get into the eco system. Eg mouse gets poisoned, bird or cat eats mouse, bird or cat dies gruesome death

While they’re still for sale I’ll keep buying them. Nothing else works IME

I know this is old but I goggled this as I've got mice ATM 🤢 I actually seen one running along the side of the skirting stopping sniffing the trap with bait on it and run around it , I really think they've grew to realise what they are and ways around it as my friends traps everyone of them had the bait ate whole way round leaving a tiny bit that could set the trap off 🤢 that's why u should never put too much on , I also stupidly have soaked cotton balls in peppermint oil and put then were i seen the mice but thats also were the traps are so i might as well have put a warning danger sign up for them 😭 I didn't want to posion them as I think a trap is quicker easier way for them to go but I haven't heard scratches in few days now 🤞

I have a house mouse for over a month. I've put down 5 different kinds of traps and even had an exterminator come out and put down traps. I noticed that the mouse does not walk along to walls, it walks in the middle of the floor avoiding the baseboards and traps. There isn't any food left out, I don't even cook any more. Thr trash is taken out regularly. I made the can bucket trap, I made the baking soda flour, sugar poison. I am developing anxiety and can't sleep. I don't know what sense to do. Please help.
