Is this a flaw in my carpet?

I’ve had this carpet down several months for a local reputable dealer and it’s has this annoying line in it all across the room, although a lot of it is hidden by a sofa. It’s not a join and very visible as it’s on the main w route into the room. I had hoped that wear and temperature would have made it ‘flatten’ out but it’s still as visible as the day it was laid. Would I be unreasonable asking them to replace it or at least come out and assess it?
Many thanks.

I'd want them to come and look at it and take it from there.

Dear Liza dear Liza

Onnabugeisha · 04/12/2022 16:12

It looks like a join/seam to me. 🤷‍♀️
What are the dimensions of your room? Carpet only comes in rolls 12ft (3.66m) wide.

SnarkyBag · 04/12/2022 16:13

How far from the edge of the carpet is it? Sometimes the edge of the carpet presses into the pile when it’s on the roll causing a line. If it’s that it should come out with time but if phone the carpet supplier for advice

You can get 4 or 5 metre rolls

You’re right, they do now. They didn’t before, so I am outdated and stand corrected. But perhaps OP should check the size rolls for the carpet she ordered? As from a quick search it looks like not all ranges come in extra wide rolls.

I think you should ask them to look at it, would definitely annoy me

You've just reminded me that this happened with my new carpet when fitted. There was a visible line.

I mentioned it at the time and the fitter guy said that it would go within a week which indeed it did. Once you see it though you can't un see it.

I would definitely get in touch about it. Where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking.

Notmyyearthisyear · 04/12/2022 16:36

I can’t remember what it’s called but it sometimes happens and it’s a factory fault, happened to me and the carpet company replaced it no problem.

The carpet was laid in late February and I’ve tried to live with it through temperature changes and seasons in the hope it would slowly fade, but it’s still as visible as the day it was laid. It’s much more noticeable in daylight too.
I’m almost 100% sure it’s not a join/seam and even if it was, it’s been placed in a very noticeable place. The room from the doorway, where it is, is 3.5m to the opposite wall, so I would assume if one was needed, it would have been placed closer to this far wall where more furniture is likely to be placed and more in the shadows, as it were.

The carpet was supplied and fitted by a local independent showroom. I’ve dealt with them for years and never had an issue before.

Definitely contact the shop where you bought it. I'm sure that they will help. With the line on my new carpet the fitters said it was where the carpet was attached to the beginning of a new roll but once it was hoovered a few times it did go. I must admit I didn't think that it would go but it did.

If your line was going to go it would have by now.

Get onto them tomorrow and they will sort it out for you.

Good luck.

janeeyreair · 04/12/2022 17:24

That would bug me so I don't blame you for wanting to change it.

You can’t choose where to put a seam. Carpet layers lay carpet from outside wall inwards towards the doorway so that the straight edge is always running along the wall. Since this line is 3.5m from the wall…I’m 100% convinced it’s a join/seam.

Thanks, that’s useful to know.

The only thing is, the whole width of the room is 3.5 metres and the visible line is 2.7m from one wall and 0.8 from the other. I’ve had a probe into the pile and there’s absolutely nothing to suggest there’s a join at all.

Thank you for all your advice - really appreciated.

The showroom sent out someone to look at it today and agree it’s definitely some sort of flaw as if it was a crease, it’s had plenty of time to ‘settle’ and it’s also not a seam/join. He even pointed out several other fainter lines that are more obvious in daylight. I was offered money or a replacement - which I’m going to take - because as you rightly pointed out, once you know it’s there, you can’t ‘unsee’ it!
