Neighbour using wifi?

I have probably posted this on the wrong topic board, so apologies, but I am baffled by something happening with my YouTube app on my television. Have been an VM customer for years, TV phone and broadband, nothing untoward, with a password-protected router, the code of which is used only by my children and myself (well, that's my hope, anyway). Since Thursday, I have noticed that when I use YouTube on the TV, the search function shows all sorts of weird searches for stuff which no-one in our house wants to watch (my kids don't use YouTube on the telly anyway) - things like golf, President Trump, Strictly Come Dancing, Peppa Pig- the mind just boggles - and there is a little flame icon beside each. Sorry for my ignorance, I have never seen this before and don't know what it means - is it an icon for a hotspot, does anyone else have VM and can enlighten me?

I have asked dc and they assure me that they haven't given the code to anyone else - they would have to physically write it down and take it out of the house, so I find it improbable. Looks like some CF is leeching off our wifi. How do I find out for certain, and can the ISP help me by giving a new passcode - how do you stop this kind of thing for good? And please tell me that people can't access paid-for content via my account? Thanks. (Would contact VM but it's such a bad time at weekend).

Google suggests it's trending searches, so what the world at large is looking for. No-one is using your WiFi.

Go into your router settings and check which devices are accessing it. You can restrict access to all but known devices. You can also hide your wifi from view to anyone on the outside. And definitely change passwords - you don't normally need your ISP for that.

Flame icon default for tending videos..

silverclock222 · 03/12/2022 13:39

First step is to change the passwords.

And yes, unless you're logged into your own YouTube account (I usually am - means I can save links on my phone to watch onscreen later) most likely what you're seeing is just general viewer trends.

Ah. Is this perhaps just some new feature that VM have launched? I have never seen it before, I have to say. Only noticed it in the last few days.

It’s either general suggestions from YouTube if you’re not logged in or if you are loggin in someone’s using your YouTube account. Nothing to do with you Wi-Fi. If logged in then you need to clear all linked devices and log them out, change the password and log back in

Joyfuljolly · 03/12/2022 13:44

Lol. How would they do that. 😂

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 03/12/2022 13:44

It's nothing to do with VM. It's a YouTube thing.

I think any kind of hacking into wireless networks is very possible, which is why I was concerned at seeing odd random stuff in my search history, which I never have before - it's normally just my own searches. But if it's just a new feature, I am reassured by that.

We only use YT for DS to watch train videos. We get a load of random crap being recommended to us, mainly around what's popular at the moment.

are you teaching your kids internet safety, monitoring their usage and teaching them about different scams and how to identify potentially dangerous interactions with people online? Because the flame trending topics thing is a pretty basic thing a cross many platforms..if you don’t know this, how’s your knowledge in other aspects of the internet, for parenting? Don’t answer for me, just something to think about.

Theskyisfallingdown · 03/12/2022 14:02

( I knew a woman who once asked something really basic about a website/internet and I was shocked she hadn’t brushed up on stuff like that, she had 2 kids approaching their teens, so it was just <yikes>, the range of potential dangers for kids online is so easily accessed)

The thing is, you don't know what you don't know, so if you don't know about it, you aren't going to be aware that you should be doing something about it.

Cantstandbullshit · 03/12/2022 14:52

Even is someone was using your Wi-Fi that would not impact your YouTube recommendations. That can only happen if someone is using your YouTube account.

jimjamy · 03/12/2022 20:40

I can see my YouTube viewing history on my tv. My telly uses Androidtv. From the menu on the YouTube home page, it's in library. Nothing listed on my history is a surprise. Lots of things it suggests for me are a bit odd. If you can do the same it will give you clues, or peace of mind..

Your problem is nothing to do with your neighbour or your wifi.
