Cleaning a gas cooker

I know this will sound ridiculous as many, many people use gas cooker’s but I have an irrational fear of them. Growing up, my mum had an electric cooker and that’s what I’m used too. This is the first flat I’ve rented that actually has a gas cooker. It took me so long to clean the rings on the hob with a spray because I thought somehow the residue would cause a fire once it was turned on!

I’m finally ready to overcome this fear as the oven needs to be cleaned so badly. It’s getting to the point where anytime I put something in the oven, there’s a strong burning smell. What can be used to clean a gas oven? I’m assuming the same products that can be used to clean an electric oven? I’m a bit worried about products dropping into the little hole where you can see the fire but I’ll make sure to be careful when cleaning. Thank you

You can use oven cleaner, just don’t spray it where the gas comes in. You can also use baking soda if you make it into a paste if you would feel happier using no chemicals, but you will probably have to leave it for a few hours to work if your oven is very dirty. I use any cleaner to hand on my gas hob, and never had any problem, although I don’t turn a burner on straight after cleaning it.

That's weird. Wikipedia seems to think that "Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO₃. It is a salt composed of a sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion." Crazy huh?
