Mould in my flat, please help! (Yucky pictures attached)

I moved into my flat last summer and noticed a little bit of mould on the windowsill in the bedroom. When I mentioned it to the estate agent they just advised to open the windows to allow air in which I’ve done everyday.

Fast forward to now and the mould in the bedroom and on the front door is awful. I live on one of those blocks where you open your front door and you’re already outside on a balcony. So everyday the outside of the door is cold whereas the inside is really warm. There’s always condensation on the windows in the morning and sometimes it’ll still be there by the evening even though the windows have been open for most of the day.

The heating has started to come on in the last month or so meaning I can’t always keep the windows wide open as thay doesn’t make sense. Can anyone advise on what to do? I’ve attached a picture of the mould on the front door and on the wall on top of the window in the bedroom. I’m looking at getting a dehumidifier (will that work?) but what can I use to clean the mould off in the meantime? Thank you

Best wishes to your baby, I hope he is comfortable.

White vinegar only kills some types of mould, so do use a few different things. I've got to get a toothbrush to get into the space the mould is lurking on the skirting board, the damp company haven't been back to replace it yet.

As before, don't use white vinegar as well as bleach as it gives a chemical reaction.

Thank you so much for the well wishes x

Oh yes, I see you do.

Does the bathroom have an extractor fan that works?

If so put a line or rack in there (perhaps over the bath), SHUT the door and window, turn the fan on, and leave it on.

It will put the water vapour outside your home, and it will generate enough suction to prevent it drifting into the rest of the flat.

No fan within the bathroom. Just the window and that’s all

You need to come up with a way of getting the water vapour from the washing, out of your home.

The washing isn’t the problem at all as it’s dried in the living room and there’s barely any mould around that windowsill. My issue is with the bedroom but I plan to get a dehumidifier anyway. Thanks for the help

Good luck with trying to get one - they're like gold dust at the moment!

Piglet John will confirm but I'm pretty sure that it's excess moisture in your home as a whole that counts.

Therefore if you dry your washing anywhere it will add to the humidity in your house, which will ultimately affect the mould.

Second spin your washing if you can.

PigletJohn · 02/12/2022 16:36

I don't think the OP believes it.

The water condenses on cold surfaces. It’s possible the coldest aren’t in the bedroom. So it can be caused by what is happening in the bedroom even though that’s not where the mould is appearing.

Basically you need to find as many ways as possible to minimise the moisture going into the air and also remove as much as possible whether by dehumidifier, airing, sponging off condensation, window vac etc.

It’s a big challenge for everyone this winter.

Oh @AchillesLastStand you’re bloody lying?! As soon as I saw your comment, I’ve gone to Savers and bought mould and mildrew spray. They didn’t have Astonish brand so I’ve had to get the dettol one. Will the mould and mildew spray help get rid of the spores or only diluted bleach? Sorry I clearly know nothing about this

The dettol one was recommended to me as the bees knees by a landlady. She said that if you sort the ventilation out, and use that stuff, it never comes back. I used it once and the mould has indeed never came back (now 3 years ago and no sign of it).

You guys are lifesavers!!! I sprayed the Dettol spray earlier on in the day and it’s as if you wouldn’t know the mould was ever there. I’ve been wiping down the windows every morning as well as opening them so I’ll definitely stay on top of this. Thank you so much for the advice guys, I really appreciate you all!

Good result OP! Thanks for updating.

The mould didn't come back in my bathroom after I used the Dettol as I've been more careful about ventilation. I still get mould on a bit of silicone by my kitchen sink that's hard to keep dry even though it's been sprayed, so you still need to keep on top of things. You should be OK if you wipe down the windows every morning, leave windows open when you're drying clothes, after showers, if you've got pans boiling etc.

@user445988673 thank you for your constant advice! I’ll certainly keep that all in mind. I’d always open the windows but I think my issue was that I was never wiping the condensation off. That’s now part of my morning routine:)
