Cavity wall insulation

We have just bought a 1930s detached house and I'm wondering if cavity wall insulation would be a good idea. Does anyone have any good experiences of installing it?

We got it through a green scheme on our 1960s house a few years ago. It cost about £400. We found our house got too hot after the heating was on for half an hour so we were either too hot with the heating on or too cold with the heating off. When we had our boiler serviced I mentioned it to the plumber. He adjusted the temperature on our boiler so the water going into radiators and taps isn't so hot and it's perfect now. For the taps it just means we need less cold water to make baths and showers a comfortable temperature. I couldn't tell you how much we've saved as we didn't pay much attention but lowering the temperature uses less energy so it's saved something.

No trouble at all with mine. I have blown mineral wool. At the time I got it the Electricity company had a big contract and I felt pretty sure they would not go bust or run off with my money, and it might have been subsidised. See if your gas or electric company, or local council, have a scheme.

The contractors can now be forced to remove it at their own expense if they put it in an inappropriate building, so they they are much more careful to look for defective walls that may be damp, or cavities that have builders rubble in them, and refuse to quote. Some parts of the country with persistent driving rain are also considered unsuitable.

In my case, the house was more comfortable, , heating costs went down, and, because the walls were warmer, misting and condensation on bathroom tiles stopped.

You seldom see such reports in the papers, because dissatisfied customers are much more newsworthy.
