We have a light with a fan. TBH I don't like conservatories, ours is too cold in winter and too hot in summer. If I could I would tear it down I would. Admittedly they do look nice. Sorry.

Fizzylemonade · 03/02/2008 13:32

Agree with disco, if we were intending to stay we would rip it down and have an extension.

They are too cold in winter and too hot in summer, plus in summer they are glaringly bright, I have roof foils in mine which has dimmed it somewhat but you couldn't watch a tv in mine and I am not even south facing!!!

We use ours a playroom (storage area really as the boys drag their toys into the lounge) although I have a double radiator in it I have to use an electric heater in winter.

A fan is ok but it is like a token gesture, air conditioning is the only way to keep it cool.

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 13:36

We have a light-fan in our front room, and we really need it all seasons (reverses for winter), so in a conservatory its probaby essential I should imagine!

wheelybug · 03/02/2008 13:38

We do and it makes a bit of a difference if its hot but not that much.

Ours has radiators which work and so in the winter, if the heating is on its actually warmer than our sitting room which the conservatory goes off.

Although, I have to say, if we stay in this house v. long term we will knock it down and extend but its quite nice having a separate room for toys whilst dd is small.

TheMadHouse · 03/02/2008 13:44

OH It seems as though I am in the mionority. We love our conservatory and chose to have a seperate heater put in, so it is toasty in the winter and fine in the summer.

We do not have a fan light and it is fine.

I would just recomend good heating, we use ours as a family room, so choose to have a programmable heater, as we do not need the heating on anywhere else during the day/

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 13:47

We have one, and we do use it. TBH the fan is mostly used when the hot tub is open, and it helps to reduce condensation. We use the conservatory as a spa room. We have a heater, but so far have not used it

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 13:52

Ooo, hot tub

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:05

Vulgar, I know, but also wonderful.

We were all in it last night.

and no, we are not swingers

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:07

Depends who 'all' refers to
I dont think they're vulgar at all. i'd live in it if we had one!

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:11

We got it just under a year ago and it is wonderful. We tend to use it around 4-5 times a week. At the time dh was in a lot of pain, and it was the only place he was comfortable. He still uses it a lot when he is in discomfort

the kids love it as much as we do. And it is a great selling point for their friends coming round to visit!

Dh always said there was no point in having a conservatory unless it had a specific purpose, and for us it is to be a spa. I would like the conservatory to be a little bigger, but our garden is too small.

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:19

at having that much time to use it too!!!

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:20

it is an 'end of the day' thing.

Probably better for me than a glass of wine, but I have been known to sip a glass while I soak!

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:22

Ah, see my end of day goes... run... bath... empty washing machine, put away clothes....get stuff ready for next day... come on mn for a few minutes... collapse in bed knowing the boys will wake up soon

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:23

How old are the boys?

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:28

4 and 2.
ds1 is fine, but ds2 usually comes into our bed at some point, which we're working on. But you know when you're tired, and you know its the quick fix?!

crokky · 03/02/2008 14:31

We don't have a conservatory, but we did in our last place. We had a fan/light thing. It was a total PITA and kept breaking - was put in by previous owners, but did look expensive. Peronally, I would just get a light without a fan and also have something like a £15 convector heater which you can switch on when you want to when it is cold. You can wall mount convector heaters, I think. I don't think a fan does that much good when it is too hot anyway.

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:49

I remember that feeling well. mine at 11 and 7, and life is so much easier now....not that this is any comfort to you!

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:53

You're the first person that I've ever spoken to with older kids that hasnt filled me with a sense of doom that things will only get worse!!! Thank you

Blandmum · 03/02/2008 14:55

dd brought me breakfast in bed this morning!

all is not perfect, and she still has her moments, but all in all this is a nice time with the kids.

And one of the best bits is that I now enjoy doing more stuff with them.

Playing monopoly is more fun than hungry hippos IYSWIM!

mustrunmore · 03/02/2008 14:58

I'm just so looking forawrd to getting rid of lots of big plastic crap from the house. And the time when the bys can join in the same actvities, so its not such a struggle to make it nice for both of them at the same time. However, we digress from the convervatory question
