Back door help please

Our back door is rotting, single glazed, contains an extra broken cat flap and is generally a mess (see pic). I really want to get it replaced before we decorate the living room.

We've just been quoted £5/6k +vat for a new one 😱 That's for solid wood, and included the frame (which they suggested should be changed to ensure no issues), but it still seems extortionate (and whether or not it is good value it is still more than we can afford).

I'm looking for advice on cheaper alternatives - is it possible to get a composite door to fit a non-standard size (892 x 2030 x 44mm)? What about uPVC? Would that be a mistake given that all out windows are wooden sashes (fitted when we had more money!). We're not expecting to sell any time soon.

Or if anyone can recommend a company in London that fits solid wood doors at a lower cost that would be ace.

Thank you!

That sounds about right if it's being made beskope for you out of solid wood. I'd get a couple of composite/UPVC companies round. As around as we have some handy man types who do this all the time. They can make the surround so that a standard door will fit.

If I were you I'd look on eBay, lots of people selling these types of door, both used and new. I've bought 2 solid doors from there (1 secondhand and 1 made new - bespoke for me) and they are both great, good quality and nice looking.

I am having new French & oak doors/windows in my house, handmade by a local joiner. cost is around £5k - £6k no VAT as he only works solo and part time (southeast) so I'd say you should shop around.

If I didn't have such specific requirements and and tight time frame I'd be stalking eBay for some.

Google your door size and see what comes up. If the frame isnt rotten, there no need to replace it, but if the hinges and latch are in different places on a new door it might be more work (and therefore money) to adjust to fit
