Insurance during building work

Hi all, we are having a loft conversion done which has also involved some minor remodelling downstairs. Our builder has walked off site and we are left with a roof simply covered in tarpaulins, it’s awful. Ongoing negotiations with builder. My question is around who is liable for damage to our property whilst he has left us exposed? He is refusing to provide his Public Liability Insurance details, our home insurance is insisting on having sight of it to keep us insured. What has anyone else done about insurance during domestic home renovations?

Hi, sorry this may not be very helpful as I'm not sure who is liable but did you inform your insurers before work began? We did on a recent extension and had to pay a small extra fee to cover the works.

Insurance company wants to see the public liability insurance as if anything happens they wont pay out anyway
I hope you informed the insurance company that you were having the renovations done?
Why did the builder walk out of the job?

I'm going to assume you told the insurance company you were having the works done.
There's is often a term and condition on there saying the property needs to be kept wind and weatherproof so as long as you're adhering to that you should be ok.

Insurance wouldn't cover for this caused by the contractors (which is why the contractors should have liability cover as the theory is they can claim on that) but insurance should still pay out for any other usual things they cover for, as long as you're abiding by the terms and conditions.

But obviously this is very general and if something happens it's up to the claims department to decide ultimately

you need to inform your insurance company beforehand or take out separate insurance for the building works etc. not helpful now I know that. Sorry

purpleme12 · 23/11/2022 23:55

Did you not tell them beforehand?

Do you have legal cover on your home insurance, if so give them as call.
