Double basins or larger shower in large ensuite?

Well it isn't exactly an ensuite but it is for DH and I to share. Loft conversion, designing a new bathroom in a large space which goes into the eaves. I'm having a free standing bath, loo, shower and sink. I am really keen on a double sink so we can each have our side as we often brush teeth on top of each other, but this means the shower will only be 900x900. Should I try to rejig or is this ok?

I've lived in houses with two basins and would choose a larger shower every time

AlwaysLatte · 20/11/2022 00:12

Big shower! Second basins are nice to have but not essential.

Interesting replies. It is contrary to what I expected.

I didn't mean two separate basins I mean a double one with two taps. Yes we absolutely get ready for stuff at the same time - we get ready for work in the mornings and we brush our teeth, he shaves, I put on make up, and we go to bed at roughly the same time and brush our teeth before we do.

In our last house we had a bathroom each basically and we used them at the same time as each other. The children had a double basin and I would totally do it again for them, but the same space decision isn't required.

We don't spend that much time showering relatively. I tend to have a bath or a two minute shower, and we are not the type to wash every time we fart like other mumsnetters.

If this is a loft conversion en suite I assume you have a main bathroom too? So you can both have a bathroom each when you get ready?

We got rid of the double basin installed by previous owner when we did our en suite and put in a larger shower instead. But if you value the basins, put them in. Your 900x900 shower is still decent size.

Double basins.

more circulation space. One sink and what so7nds like a perfectly reasonable shower. What we miss from old big en-suite is being able to move round each other. Ours is definitely now a one person space.

Sunsetchaser01 · 20/11/2022 07:59

Unless you are showering together 900 x 900 is a perfectly good size shower. Double basins aren't so common in the UK but very popular in the states where stuff is big enough and done properly. I would go with the double basin. Hate bashing elbows with my hubby and cross spitting toothbrush foam is annoying 😂. Go with what you really want and suits your lifestyle best!

demotedreally · 20/11/2022 07:59

Thanks for this all! We can't use the family bethroom as 2 teenage girls will be using it. We can't ditch the bath as I use it every day.

I suppose my question is not really about double sinks, it is more whether a 900 sq shower is big or will feel small. I prefer an offset but I can't have everything!

Shower to the power 100!

RM2013 · 20/11/2022 10:54

I’d go for larger shower. Can’t see that we’d use double sinks

crumpet · 20/11/2022 10:57

Big bath with shower over rather than a free standing shower?

sausage767 · 20/11/2022 11:05

I think double sinks are a total waste. I like a large bench top area with mirror over so you can both use the mirror at the same time, but actual sinks no.

I agree. Most bathrooms don't have enough work top space IMO.

lurchermummy · 20/11/2022 12:50

I do not understand double basins at sll - we take turns to use the bathroom, why do you need to clean your teeth side by side?

WombatChocolate · 20/11/2022 17:51

I agree that a decent size basin with a good amount of moulded in worktop space with a decent size mirror above is good.

You can get lots of basins these days which have a big built in worktop on either one or both sides of the basin and whole thing is moulded from one piece so no joins or cracks for dirt to get in. You’d have room for 2 to stand under a big wall sized mirror and one to do teeth and other to be doing makeup at same time to the side of basin.

Also agree a 900 square shower is a very good size.

Lucky you, the bathroom is big enough for everything you need. Personally I find 2 basins a bit naff and the kind of you’d get in a hotel trying quite hard to be luxurious, but really just being a bit flashy. But maybe that’s just me. 2 lots of taps over the same longer basin does mean 2 can brush their teeth together but they are still both spitting into the same space, which some seem to object to…so is it really any different?

scottishnames · 20/11/2022 18:03

Much more than all the 'what looks better stuff' I'd invest in as much as you can in top-functioning ventilation. I'm prejudiced, because I hate en-suites - who wants to go to bed in what is in effect a whiffy bathroom ? (people never seem to notice this but I can tell you others do) - and en-suites have a terrible habit of making bedrooms damp and dank. I would not want my clothes to be at risk of getting mouldy.

hangsangwitch · 20/11/2022 18:07

This is fascinating. In the over 20 years of living with DH, I have never once needed to use the bathroom at the same time as him. One of us just waits! The thought of standing there brushing our teeth at the same time makes me want to heave, but each to their own.

TheOrigRights · 20/11/2022 18:19

Just measured our walk in shower and at its biggest the floor space is just less than 900 x 820 (it's curved).
It's plenty big enough for us, though we are all slim. A little bigger wouldn't be wasted, but it feels fine.
I wouldn't spend on a double basin just to fill space, just have more floor (to skip about naked!)

Of course you CAN use the family bathroom. Plenty of families have a single bathroom. It's nice to have one for the kids and one for the adult.

Yes a 900 x 900 shower will be fine unless you are very large.

RampantIvy · 20/11/2022 18:32

We aren't in the habit of emptying our bowels just before going to bed. Besides, our ensuite has a window that can be opened.

tootiredtobother · 20/11/2022 18:34

double basins, if i have to rinse out his stubble bits one more time '
I'll.......

VerbenaGirl · 20/11/2022 18:36

I’d go bigger shower, totally.
