Stylish people! Best style of interior doors for a modern house? Opinions please!

We have a modern house, built in the 70s - a bit unusual outside and in, lots of glass.
I'm adding glazed double doors to a large downstairs room, and planning to change all the current hideous interior doors shortly.

What is the best style, do you think? Wood/wood veneer (most likely oak) or painted white? Something else? DH and I can't agree.

I like a modern style, by which I mean classic modern, with a hint of mid century (not 'currently trendy') and modern art, Bauhaus, le Corbusier etc. I have my preference for doors, but would like to hear your views first!

TIA

Wood- don’t need painting.
Tod doors

I think doors really date a house at least to its decade - seems to be impossible to avoid.
We have a 60s house, all new doors needed, (current terrible faux Georgian ones). Thinking of four panel style but I wonder if I'm just swayed by the current mid century craze and will wish they were plain in future.
If in doubt, go simple.

What type of glass doors do you already have? Would crittal/crittal style doors work with them for reception rooms/hall/kitchen downstairs? The trend at the moment is for Bauhaus style black crittal, which could be matched with black painted plain wooden doors for a monochrome Bauhaus scheme.

What type of glass doors do you currently have?

on a personal level I like pale oak doors. The real deal

I'm not remotely stylish so not sure if I'm allowed to answer, but if I had a modern house I'd want doors like this.

Yes, that's a crittal style door. That's probably the closest to mid modern/Bauhaus style. Looks lovely, the only downside is lack of privacy.

We're going for Crittal style doors (buying direct from a manufacturer) for the downstairs rooms but have got those exact Todd doors everywhere else (the oak veneer version).

... and the handprints/cleaning if you have children. I have a pair and love them but they are high maintenance and wouldn't want any more

If you want Bauhaus style, you can pare things back to the simplest form: a solid slab, painted white, preferably as tall as possible. No architrave or woodwork. www.todd-doors.co.uk/flush-white

examples of Bauhaus glazed doors here:
www.griffwerk.de/en/blog/bauhaus-style/ These are similar to Crittal, but with thinner frames.

A 1970s house isn't modern! It's a period house, 50 years old now. If the doors are original then stick with them, and if they're not, then pick something which goes well with that period.

My parents bought a 1920s house in the 1970s (then a similar age to yours) and ripped all the period features out to modernise it - which now, they regret immensely.

LowbrowVictoriana · 19/11/2022 09:44

Thank you all so much.
Black crittal style doors are my absolute first choice, but DH would never agree which is why I didn't mention them before Sad They'd be great for the glazed double doors that I'm doing for a very light room downstairs. I was hoping they'd be mentioned though, as I'll try again to persuade him!

The choice is likely between oak and painted white. I'm in the painted white camp, and do like the shaker panel style above. Painting and cleaning doesn't bother me. DH thinks oak doors are the last word in style, and wants oak everywhere. I like a bit of wood but not everywhere.

If anyone is still reading, do you prefer oaknir white? Thanks again.

Hi @AlfiesGirl by modern I meant "classic modern", rather than recent, and believe me you wouldn't want the original doors! They're very lightweight frames with dark sapele veneers. Very ugly, cheap and seventies! I've already painted the ones we still have to improve them a bit but they're going.
You may have a point though... I might Google NICE seventies doors!

Flat panel painted white with decent ironmongery.

Yellownotblue · 19/11/2022 10:24

@AlfiesGirl “modern” is a period. It doesn’t mean the same thing as contemporary.

NotMeNoNo · 19/11/2022 13:01

I think the 4 panel doors are 1950s/60s rather than 70s. (Seen here in a similar house to my grandparents post war council semi). A more modern house would maybe suit flush doors if you are brave enough.

I'm getting rid of flush doors @NotMeNoNo !
I painted the existing sapele flush doors a few years ago and now am getting rid.
Although the house was built in 1973, it was from an older, American design, so could comfortably take panelled doors.
Hopefully!

This book might be helpful for design inspo www.amazon.co.uk/Style-Council-Inspirational-Interiors-Ex-Council/dp/0224101137
I second Todd doors, we used them for our front door and we’re very happy. Not cheap mind.

NellyBarney · 19/11/2022 23:15

Could your dh maybe compromise on whitewashed or limewaxed oak?
