What’s it to be, shower enclosure or wet room?

We’re having our bathroom refitted and can’t decide on either a wet room design or a shower enclosure. The plumber advises a wet room design albeit with a glass screen and stone flooring with mosaic tiled area in wet areas. But I’m worried we’ll have slippery floors and water splashing everywhere in a small bathroom. The other option is an enclosure but I’m worried that this could overflow onto porous flooring if the drain blocks etc. I’ve got teenagers who wouldn’t necessarily alert me to rising water in the shower and so I’m trying to find the best choice for everyone.

I’d personally go for the wet room. Super easy to clean and less chance of leaks happening!

MsPinkMarshmallow · 16/11/2022 17:00

I'd go for a wet room as well but make sure it's properly sealed in the room so water can't go through the ceiling.

You'd have to get the room incredibly wet to get porous flooring wet.

I've had both and the wet room is definitely the best.

I hate wet rooms. Soggy loo roll. Wet toilet seat, etc.

we have a wet room and i'd change to a shower if I could (too expensive)

  • if the drain blocks, it leaks sooner because the water just goes everywhere, there is nothing to keep it in the shower area.
  • very hard & expensive to fix if (when) the grout or sealant leaks
  • if the house moves at all (subsistence etc) you are more likely to get leaks.

proper shower tray with a decent rim and a waste that you can actually clean out when you need to would win for me.

Enclosure 100%. Had a wet room for 4 years in uni and what a pain it was. Think of logistics of having to use a bathroom with wet floor. One teen has a shower, then next teen goes in wearing socks...now teen 2 has wet socks...

Depends on the subfloor. If it's cement a properly installed wet room could work but they can be leaky if not done right. If a wooden floor, and as a result subject to movement and effects of damp, I'd go for a shower tray and enclosure. All round a tray and enclosure is the better bet.

JulesJules · 16/11/2022 17:11

I would definitely go for the enclosure, get a nice big walk in style one if you have space.

Oujiawoowoo · 16/11/2022 17:11

I hate wet rooms - we often seem to get lumbered with them when we stay in hotels. Everything in there gets damp and the floor is slippy and takes ages to try. Some people love them but they’re a big no-no for me!

Can I just clarify that we have a wet room with a glass panel so the water doesn't spray all over the place but there's also no tray.

The tiles will be very very slightly slanted so all the water goes to the drain.

Also a wetroom is great if it can be a separate to your familly bathroom but not so much if it's the same room. If theres only room for one the only time I would have a wetroom is if it was a small flat and space meant it was the better option.

Sprig1 · 16/11/2022 17:16

Definitely an enclosure. Wet rooms are a PITA. Water gets everywhere (so you also get water marks everywhere) and they always, always leak at some point.

orbitalcrisis · 16/11/2022 17:42

Wet room. All bathrooms should be wet rooms in my opinion. They are in many other countries and it makes it SO much easier to clean! My bathrooms are only partially tiled and have wooden skirting boards, all the porous surfaces make it mouldy and unhygienic.

ReadyForPumpkins · 16/11/2022 18:24

Shower tray. I had a wet room on the ground floor once and never again. You are relying on the grout staying water tight.

Retrievemysanity · 16/11/2022 18:28

We have a wet room in our en-suite at DH’s request and I hate it. He wanted it so we could have statement tiles and see more of them as it’s quite a small room so aesthetically it’s nice but practically it’s awful.

Calmdown14 · 16/11/2022 18:30

I would only have a wet room if it had underfloor heating. We had one when we moved it. I hated it and built a corner shower enclosure over it!

Admittedly it was done with an elderly person in mind so was not slip tiles ) impossible to clean), light grey grout so can't bleach but also couldn't remove water staining from it so it never looked same colour all over, so so cold under foot and never dried fully (although we don't have gas so that may have helped).
No storage because everything sprays more.

SlippingIntoTheTwilightZone · 16/11/2022 18:39

The only times I've used wetrooms were in Greece and in Finland. Both times the bathrooms were so hot that the floor was dry literally before I stepped out of the shower. I don't think this would work in the UK (assuming that's where you are OP) unless you want a stifling bathroom and huge heating bills.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/11/2022 18:46

I have a wet room.

Get a full length shower enclosure.

Davethecat2000 · 16/11/2022 18:53

Definitely a shower enclosure.

Starseeking · 16/11/2022 19:22

I hate wet rooms.

Proper shower enclosure all the way.

Notsympatheticenough · 16/11/2022 19:29

Wet rooms are Lovely if you have underfloor heating, a very solid subfloor and it’s big enough that everything doesn’t get splashed….

we got a glass screen and low profile shower tray. Happy with that.

ClaireEclair · 16/11/2022 20:53

My mum has a wet room and I hate it! It started leaking last year and was a pain to fix.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 17/11/2022 01:36

We don’t have underfloor heating nor a large bathroom so I think I’m leaning towards a shower tray and glass screen. The wet rooms sound lovely but my gut feeling is that it’s not probably right for us. Now to persuade DH!
