Teachers leave for house move

Hi,
Are there any teachers here who have had leave approved for a house move? DP is absolutely stressing me out. He hasn't asked still. We've known about moving since he started there in Sept. And I need to bloody know! I know why he isn't asking - but that doesn't fecking help me right now! (He's afraid that they won't give him the permanent job he desperately needs/wants if he is anything less than perfect. I haven't seen him in months now pretty much...)
Just wanting a general consensus to see what could be expected. Did you get no leave and get told to book move for school hols (not possible! Mortgage runs out before!). Did you get 1 day? 2 days? Paid? Unpaid?
🥴

I got a day paid but it was a very long time ago!

Fiftyand · 09/11/2022 23:34

I had 1 day paid but I think it’s at the discretion of HT. Can he ask other staff if they’ve been given it?

SpringIntoChaos · 09/11/2022 23:35

1 day paid leave is give to move house. It's really not a problem and he is entitled to it. Good luck with your move...I've literally just done the same this week and completely understand how stressful it is xx

*given

Salsajoy · 09/11/2022 23:36

I had one day paid, about four years ago

Quitelikeacatslife · 09/11/2022 23:38

You are entitled to one paid day

WhatHappenedToYoyos · 09/11/2022 23:38

1 day paid but he'll need to put his leave of absence in asap. If staff are off for other planned reasons on the same day then it could be declined.

noblegiraffe · 09/11/2022 23:42

One day paid, and it had to be completion day. There should be a school policy.

Kite22 · 09/11/2022 23:52

One day. Paid.
Entitled through the Burgundy Book when all Teachers were on Teachers Pay and Conditions.
Of course, Academies have put a real spoke in the works and don't need to have the same T&C like all teachers did back in the day.

Other moves I didn't need it as already on maternity leave (once) and school holidays (once)

Cocokitty · 10/11/2022 00:03

Okay, sounds good so far!
He is employed by LA, not academy. Phew.
What happens if the date changes? We won't know for definite for a few more weeks until exchange. He might need to confirm the date a week before for example (I really want 4 weeks between exchange and completion but no one else in the chain is in agreement! A week is the best I can get apparently!!).

In my last house move I was moving over 100 miles away and it was a very difficult time as I was on my own so decided to sell my house and continue renting for a few weeks while looking for a new house. So I only had to pack up my old house and did not move into a new one the same day. My dates were not fixed until a couple of weeks before the move went ahead as there were delays in the chain.

I kept my headteacher fully informed, giving him the expected date but warning him that it might change, as indeed it did, getting delayed a week. My request was for time off on the Friday, the day of the move, but he told me I could have two days as I should be there on the Thursday when the removal men did the packing and loading up most of my things ready for storage.

This helped me a lot, I’d only been working at the school for a few months and did not really know the headteacher. He was very considerate though to all his staff. He somehow heard that my son was graduating from university a few weeks after my move and I had not asked for a day off as he’d let me have extra time for my house move. He just told me that I should go to the graduation and to book the day! Not many heads like him!

Your husband needs to have a conversation with the head teacher, I really don’t think it will make any difference to him being offered a permanent contract, that decision will be based on the quality of his teaching and from lesson observations.

Salsajoy · 10/11/2022 00:16

Up to his HT I would think in terms of dates shifting and availability of cover. Good luck with the move! 🏡

Salsajoy · 10/11/2022 00:18

Also, agree with the previous poster about this not impacting on being offered a permanent post.

Emilyed · 12/11/2022 21:57

He shouldnt worry - If he has a general good record of attendance one or two days arent going to make any difference. And people are off all the time - for hospital appointments, training courses, trips, bereavement, maternity etc etc - schools are used to it and will cope

2greenroses · 12/11/2022 22:00

I agree, he should get one day, paid, as he isn't in an academy. I understand reluctance to ask, but it wont be a good thing to spring on the school last minute, either!

Inasec24 · 12/11/2022 22:01

Yes, we get one paid moving day.

hauntedvagina · 12/11/2022 22:23

Are you using removals? If so, there's really very little need for two pairs of hands.

formulatingAresponse · 12/11/2022 22:32

The longer he leaves it to ask for them to juggle his classes around the more annoyed they'll be.

It's in the contract that you're allowed a day off specifically to move house as a teacher

formulatingAresponse · 12/11/2022 22:33

I mean to get cover for his classes

ThanksItHasPockets · 12/11/2022 23:21

Most of you need to read the Burgundy Book. There’s nothing specifically either in there or in STPC about entitlement to a paid moving day. It is dependent on school / LA policy and at the headteacher’s discretion.

Kite22 · 12/11/2022 23:42

When was it taken out then @ThanksItHasPockets ?

ThanksItHasPockets · 13/11/2022 08:00

Well, it’s not in this edition from 1978, revised 1985 www.local.gov.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Burgundy%20Book%201985%20Edition%20WEB.pdf, or this one from 2000 (which I believe was the last time it was revised)
neu.org.uk/media/42/view. Anything before that significantly predates my birth, let alone my entry to the profession, so I wouldn’t like to say.
