4 day removal?

StripeyBedSocks · 08/11/2022 18:28

We are (hopefully) finally moving at the end of the month

4 bed house plus garden office contents plus garden furniture. 10-15 minutes down the road. Packing and removal service

2 out of 3 removal quotes says they need 4 days, two before completion day to pack, do what they can on completion day depending on key handovers and the rest on day 4

is this the norm for this type of service?

last time we moved from rented and had an overlap so we had the whole day and I did the packing and moved quite a bit in the car doing several trips

I really don’t think we have that much stuff but then again no-one ever does I suppose

better to have plenty of time and not be stressed and run out of time but jeez that’s people in the house more than I would like plus ££££

interested to hear other peoples recent experiences and how it worked out in the end

4 days seems a lot? We moved august 2020 (so maybe things have changed but I'd be surprised) and used packing and removal service and that took 2 days.

They came the day before to pack, took half a day and then the day of removal. 3 bed house, large outbuildings.

4 days does seem a lot.

Sorry, meant to add the packing service was the best thing I've done. With 2 kids under 5 at the time and working full time it took so much stress out.

They packed everything really well. I did keep a bag in the car if essentials like kids pj's, phone charger and kettle otherwise they would have packed that too! If it isn't nailed down, they pack it!

Can they not just put more men/ vehicles on the job. Four days does seem excessive when you are moving a short distance.

Also if you are planning on getting rid of stuff do it now and then get them to re-quote. They will always quote for what’s there even if you tell them you plan to get rid of it.

I moved a 5 bed house plus garden office and double garage, 15 miles away, and it was a two day move from all four companies who quoted - two local recommended companies and two national.

The company I went with did indeed do it comfortably within the two days, three men both days 9-4.

Unless your house is very full, I can't understand why it's four days. Are they trying to use fewer staff?

I’ve moved twice with 4 bed houses and both times it was done in 2 days including one for packing the day before the actual move.
We don’t have a garden office though only a garden shed plus garage.
Maybe you have considerably more stuff than average or maybe you should get another couple of quotes

We did a 4 bed house 200 mile move last year and had two quotes for four days and one for three days. We were going into rented and already had keys so no need to wait for solicitors.

Three days was a massive mistake. They packed on day 1, finished packing and loaded the vans on day 2, then did this insanely long day on day 3 where they drove the 200 miles, then unloaded. They didn't have time to do it properly just at speed so we had boxes and furniture in all the wrong rooms and on the wrong floors.

If we'd gone with the other quote then day 3 would have been the drive, then basic set up in house for overnight. With unloading the majority on day 4.

You haven't got the distance but you have got the limiting completion timeframe which means you might not get into the house until late - we bought in summer, the money went through in the morning but we didn't get keys until after 4pm.

We did a five bed move 150 miles without the packing service and of the four quotes we got two said four days whilst the other two said five.

In the end - because it was the week before Christmas so we were left with only one that wasn't booked up - we used one of the five day removers. They loaded majority of our house contents on the first two days, returned with a third, smaller lorry on the third day mainly for the garden stuff (which was primarily huge plants in pots, shed contents etc as we left our garden furniture for our buyers), then drove to the new house in the late afternoon.

They stayed overnight in their vans and began unloading as soon as we'd completed (11am of day four) as the property was empty and the EA met them there with the house keys. We arrived early afternoonon day four. Day five was also spent unloading. This was five blokes loading and four unloading at the other end.

Seems a lot of days , we moved last year , 3 bed to 4 bed , loads of garden pots and furniture , plus 2 offices , loads of heavy books and delicate kitchen gadgets , about 5 miles , I did all packing pre move , the removal company arrived about 8am 2 medium lorries & 3 men , 1 dismantled furniture whilst the other 2 loaded , I cleaned the house and DP worked on throughout from the garden , once all loaded they went off towards the new property and had lunch on the way and we went to drop off our old keys and wait to collect the new ones , phoned the Men as soon as we had keys and met them at the new house , partner continued his work after looking around house ( he hadn’t had chance to view prior ) and I directed where furniture etc was to go , one day excluding packing £900 plus I added £100 tip ( very well earned )
disclaimer , I’ve used the removal company before several times , we are serial movers , they are a local family firm that has a very good reputation,
One day 8 am until approx 4 pm

Our removal ( next week) is a 2 day one, but I have a lot of garden pots ( including trees in pots) and a shed full to move.
We're doing our own packing. Distance, about 50 miles.

Day 1 - all the garden and 95% of the house is loaded up, leaving us the bed, telly, a sofa and a couple of mugs! Lading expected to take from 9am to 3pm.
Day 2- remaining 5% loaded onto a Luton van.
DH, the cats and I ( and a couple of essentials) go in our car.

Last time we moved ( 300 miles) it was done in two days

Bluevases · 09/11/2022 18:35

I've never done more than 2 days, including packing. That's for 4 and 5 bed houses and a distance of 10-20 miles each time.

boogiejive · 09/11/2022 18:44

We had a four bed with a garage and. Alarge loft and it took four days. 2 days packing ahead of moving day, a whole load of activity on the moving day, and then the rest of our items on the Saturday.

I ended up feeling that we'd got a lot of value for money!

StripeyBedSocks · 10/11/2022 20:48

Ok so some similar but quite a few done in less days. I don’t want to be the one to say “no do it in 2” then end up with no time left, maybe go for 3 days

another thing that gets me is all the boxes, one firm says they reckon we will need 200, I just can’t picture it. I declutter on a regular basis, we don’t even keep hold of books.
