Ikea Kallax - worthy storage?

DD is 25 and due to disabilities lives at home and probably will for at least the next few years. We moved to this house last year as it was adapted for her, her bedroom is a large downstairs rectangle looking out on to the garden. It is lovely and she loves it Smile As she spends the vast majority of her time in there, we are trying to make it look less like a bedroom and more like a multi-functional room. She moved in with existing furniture so she could get used to the space before replacing.

She already has a sofa and a bed, a desk and table, and we are awaiting delivery of a large wardrobe fitment. What she desperately needs is storage for things like her massive cross stich collection, jigsaws, board games, books and hand held exercise equipment. Oh and a selection of files and folders.

Would Kallax be suitable, as I am thinking of maybe attaching to the wall. I did look at the Besta wall units but they seem to be out of stock at my local ikea.

I love Kallax and we have masses of it. The only trouble is that the boxes are quite deep and we find that when full they’re quite heavy which could be tricky if she can’t lift them down. You can get drawers and inserts which help but it does add to the cost. If you want better colours and options for inserts Amazon do lots of 30x30 options.

I’d say it’s sturdy and functional rather than gorgeous.

I agree with the previous poster, the inserts /boxes you chose has a big impact on how it looks.

We have Kallax and use them as a room divider. Bookcase editions of big games fit well. Of course you don't have to put drawers in all the spaces!

Love the Kallax range - got it in pretty much every room in the house as it's very convenient. Agree that the boxes can be heavy when full, but the spaces are great for stacking games etc, & you can get a lot into the boxes.

We have quite a lot of these and are happy with them. All floor standing though, I would never have them attached to the wall only, they are heavy enough when empty.

Kallax are not deep enough for most board game/jigsaw storage. They hang over the edge.

Besta fits board games very well.... We just updated our lounge to replace some Kallax with Besta as it's easier for storing larger board ganes, jigsaws etc. Ikea do a range of storage baskets, drawers and things to add on to it as well.

Thanks everyone, lots to think about Smile I think maybe a combination of Kallax and Besta may be the way to go, even though I worry that that may end up quite expensive.

If they "modern" board games she has in the square boxes. (Eg Ticket to Ride ) Kallax is perfect for them.

Is there a skirting board in the room? Sounds silly, but because the Kallax is thus off the wall itself slightly, any board games here overhang the back against the wall so still look tidy from the front. They are brilliant for baskets of craft and other items too.

There is a skirting board so that is helpful thank you. She only has a couple of games (monopoly and such like) but she really wants somewhere to store them so they look nice Smile.

I am going to pop through to ikea and pick up a couple of the Kallax baskets so she can get an idea of what can fit in each one. Think baskets will be on the bottom row due to weight concerns, then shelves on the top rows.
