Putting chimney back

Has anyone ever done this?
Loft extension was done before we bought. They have removed chimney breast on 1st floor.
I really want a log burner.
How much would it cost to put back?

I should imagine it would be expensive and very messy if actually doable.
Couldn't you get a log burner that has the flue pipe inside the room then going out of the wall?
I think they look quite nice and rustic

It cost us about 6K including having the log burner installed. Period house- It was quite complicated. You will need planning permission and building regs but it was worth it in the end. I learnt a lot about chimney construction along the way!

We did this. The previous owner had taken out the chimney breast but the chimney was still on the roof. We had a functional chimney breast put back, with an open fireplace. We use it a lot and it was totally worth it!

My log guy is funny. In August, as he delivered my second load, ready for winter, we were laughing about how 2-3 years ago, there was talk of banning log burners. He's never been busier.

I don't think ours is on the roof as they put an extension on. We have the fireplace downstairs.

Yes my £7k predicted bill for this year is certainly motivating!

We put ours back. Needed a liner and a bit of brick work.

Today we've had the log burner on since lunchtime plus the heating for an hour around tea time. Love it

CantSleepCountingSheep · 07/11/2022 06:47

@lipstickwoman what did it cost you?

So lovely to hear of everyone restoring their fireplaces :D I always hate it when people buy a nice old house and then rip out all of its character. I'd trade my ugly modern box for a house with an old fireplace in an instant.
