Weird-shaped kitchen in new house - PICS

The house we're buying doesn't have a conventional kitchen layout. It's basically an l-shape, leading to a dining area

Definitely no scope for an island.

There's a lot of built in storage down the side where the fridge is - installed by current owners - not sure whether to keep it all in.

Any ideas on how to make the best use of this shape of kitchen??

@Novemberhater have you heard of something called TACT!? So rude!
I can see all sorts of styles and layouts to make this room look great.

OP asked for an option publicly. No diagram, just photos of a cluttered area, but wanting advice. Impossible to give constructive advice with nothing to base it on. I can't see past the jumble of stuff and the white goods dominating the area. As I said, from the pics it looks expensive to sort out and if it were me I'd buy something that was easier to adapt to suit me.

That space is cluttered but it’s not op’s clutter. I think a really good tidy, taking down the open shelves near the cooker. And see how you feel in a couple of months.

I like the idea of shaving off the lounge to make the kitchen wider but that’s big work and might leave your lounge too narrow.

live with it a bit I think and see how you feel

Caspianberg · 06/11/2022 09:55

Op can do anything with that space.

Got you should have seen our kitchen when we bought 5 years ago. We lived with it until this spring. It was last done in 1960, and awful.

The kitchen above is fine. It’s spacious and usable for a long time. It’s just personal preference if op wants to change layout and style

@SmokedHaddockChowder nice idea! Thanks - the temptation is def to rip out those units and widen that area - really like the dining/seating idea x

@WahineToa nothing majorly structural for the meantime - ideally looking for ideas as to how to make best use of the current layout.

Any one else agree with @SmokedHaddockChowder on changing the "corridor" into the dining area by ripping out storage and adding built in seating? I like that idea.

Is there space to do that without knocking through?

The cooker is too far from the sink.

mullingitallover · 06/11/2022 14:43

Floorplan got removed- here it is again x

Yes the idea of turning the corridor area into seating, if there is the width after you remove the storage, would be quite a good option without big structural changes.

Has this house been extended? Just such a weird layout.
With the ensuite being absolutely ginormous and the weird side bit of kitchen corridor...just looks oddly done.

mullingitallover · 06/11/2022 16:01

Yes it has had a double storey extension -I agree, it is an unusual layout

@UnionGlassCloth do you mean get a sleeker fridge in the same place?

I like the uniform bookcase idea.

The seller made the storage unit that's there and is very proud of it, but it eats up the space IMO.

No, I’d probably move the fridge, changing the low run of units on the right hand side of the door as you look at it for high ones with built in appliances. Then I’d have a wall of cupboards in the narrow bit if I needed storage.

What would you do with the dining room if you put a table in the corridor?

You might be able to build in a space/make room for a small armchair/reading lamp in the narrow bit - somewhere to sit down near the kitchen. I reckon it could be a really useful space.

It looks plenty big enough OP. That fridge unit is really deep, so once it's gone the space would be generous.

Thanks @UnionGlassCloth they're great ideas.
