Heating won't turn on

I have a combi boiler. Baxi.
The heating isn't coming on!
I turn it on at the thermostat, it does the flame symbol on there so it's doing what it should on there.
But on the boiler there's no light on the radiator bit and I'm guessing there's supposed to be a light when the heating's working
Has anyone had this happen before?
Does anyone have any experience with any of this?

I meant underneath the boiler for the hoses not at the back

TimBoothseyes · 05/11/2022 12:50

Sorry it's called a diverter valve not exchange.

I know it's obvious, but have you tried turning the heating control to full on (i.e. the one to the right of the display?)

Topseyt123 · 05/11/2022 12:58

We did have this or similar happen a few months ago. It turned out that the pump was failing. Output from it was so weak that the boiler just didn't respond. Once the engineer replaced the pump everything worked again.

Hard to see from the photo but it looks like the pressure is okay
can you take a photo of just the gauge at the far right?

Here....

I also have this boiler & the same problem. However if I wiggle the plastic hoses at the back it switches on. This happened both today and yesterday. I'm going to get a plumber to look at it but it's worth you giving that a go.

Oh this is interesting.
😟

@purpleme12 it looks well within the normal range - mine had dropped the other week and this was the issue.

hope you get it resolved

No I haven't tried this

Oh so it could still be the pump even though the water works?

Can you share a pic of your thermostat screen? Might be something to do with the settings?

purpleme12 · 05/11/2022 13:26

It looks how it should do, with the flame on

@purpleme12 I have attached a photo - the grey hose and the white pipe is what I have gently jiggled and each time it's clicked on. I had already changed the batteries in my thermostat to no avail & like you the pressure was fine

grannycake · 05/11/2022 13:44

It would help if I uploaded the pic

I think the problem is more likely your wall thermostat than your boiler.

Can you take the stat off the wall and position it next go your boiler? See if the boiler reacts in any way when you change the stat settings.

New batteries are always worth trying.

Wireless stats are not very reliable.

Digistat does not have a very good reputation

Photograph the receiver and its wires if you can see it.

Have you got the Digitstat instructions? It may need to rebind to the receiver

Start with new batteries (not rechargeables)

PigletJohn · 05/11/2022 14:44

Correction

I had assumed your digistat was wireless, but it is an older model so may not be.

purpleme12 · 05/11/2022 14:53

Yes it looks like that.

Have you come across this problem before?

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 05/11/2022 15:02

No, thermostats are so simple (unless wireless) that there's not much to go wrong, except the batteries and fading display. Does anything at all happen to the boiler when you fiddle with the stat? If the boiler is firing up and supplying hot water, it's not pressure

It might possibly be diverter switching, but that's inside the boiler and needs a qualified repair.

Ah - ok - mine is a bit more complicated than that, and I have had problems with the 'frost setting' being on, and not realising it. It was only when I turned it off and on again that it started working.

purpleme12 · 05/11/2022 15:37

So I put new batteries in the thermostat and it's working!
I had changed the batteries already to the ones in the Tele channel (no new ones in) so I didn't think it was the batteries. Also because the thermostat was showing the flame like it should do but the boiler wasn't firing up the heating I didn't think it was the battery.
But I've been to shop and bought new batteries, put them in and it's fired it up!

As a gas engineer I come across this often. 1st check to see if you have hot water, if yes then the fault is on the heating demand. Either the diverter valve or heating sensor.
It could also be that the stat is not sending the signal back to the boiler.

Thank you.
I think (hope) it might be sorted now

Do you separate thermostats for upstairs and downstairs? More than likely it's an issue with timer/ thermostat if there's no error code on the boiler
