What kind of a person can put a hole in my wall for a washing machine hose?

I have no idea what trade this would be. Handy person? Builder?

Any ideas? Also any idea of rough cost?

Plumber or a handy person, shouldn't cost too much

PigletJohn · 04/11/2022 15:43

A plumber

It can be done by anybody who has an SDS+ drill (which is big and heavy) with cutters in the correct size, and competence to use it.

Builders and electricians also use such drills, but the plumber will have the correct size and does dozens just like yours.

Diyextension · 04/11/2022 15:44

Anyone who can use a drill ? What size hose ?

PigletJohn · 04/11/2022 15:46

A plumber will also be able to fit a plastic waste, trap, standpipe, shoe or whatever is needed to make a better job of it. Washing machine hoses are usually connected to sink wastes, or sometimes go to gullies.

Thank you! I've just realised I wrote washing machine hose when I actually meant Tumble dryer hose! What an idiot!

Is it still a plumber I need or a handy person?

Could you not just get dryer with the water draw thing thing so no hole needed? Just plug in and go?

WellingtonSquareTree · 04/11/2022 16:53

Plumber or anyone with a sds drill (heavy duty) and a large holesaw cutting bit. Lots of videos on Youtube showing people doing it so you know what to expect. You will also need a vent cover for the other side of the wall if venting to the outside so again someone with a drill, wall plugs and screws. Plumber or handy man more likely a plumber who should readily have these things.

BruceAndNosh · 04/11/2022 16:54

A hard man from Eastenders?

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 04/11/2022 16:59

Do you already own the tumble drier?? Buy a condensing one that doesn't need a hose if not.

workingeverysingkeday · 04/11/2022 17:05

You can buy a kit in wickes to do this. Anyone with a drill can make a hole. The kit then covers it up and has the hose to go with it

Crazymadchickenlady · 04/11/2022 17:20

We have ours (a heat pump dryer) going into the same waste pipe as the washing machine. Or do you mean the big 4inch vented dryer pipe?

MarianneVos · 04/11/2022 17:25

I already have the dryer. It's one of those big plastic white hoses, it's next to the washing machine but I don't think the washing machine pipes are big enough?

I think I'd prefer someone who could drill the hole and sort the whole thing out as I'm not handy at all!

It sounds like a vented tumble dryer so a 4 inch flexible hose. Only condenser models have the removable tray which collects the water, you can install a drain waste to that so it drains into a pipe at the rear rather than the drawer at the front. I have done this to my own machine.

I am assuming the OP has either moved into somewhere new or bought a vented tumble dryer. There are boxes you can attach the flexible hose to that collect the water inside but I have no idea how good they are. Most people vent the tumble dryer hose out of the wall to the outside. You need a kit like this one www.screwfix.com/p/manrose-tumble-dryer-termination-kit-100mm/11703 and a big old drill. Some people don't feel confident doing this. Drilling a large bore hole through 2 walls can be daunting. We have no idea of the condition of the brick work outside and whether there is any pipework, electric cables or anything else in the way of the intended route through the wall.

@MarianneVos you need a plumber. Dead easy for them to do.

Diyextension · 04/11/2022 18:49

Anyone with a 4 inch core drill can do it , you can even hire one just for the job if you like. But the need to correct drill to do it , coring large holes requires a drill with a clutch on it so when it jams it dosnt snap your wrists. 🫳🏼

Plumber or general all around handy person, basically my dad

😂

I'll get mine on it tomorrow then.

Will search for a plumber as my dad is no handier than I am!

For clarity, I've moved house and the utility room doesn't have anywhere to put the hose so we've had to open the back door for it but would like a better solution!

My mother used to put hers through the cat flap

jimjamy · 05/11/2022 08:36

Electricians do this too. A big hole is needed for bathroom fans. If you have other building/plumbing/electrical jobs that need doing, could you combine it with that?
