decorating walls different colours

So dh and I have agreed on two different walls for our bedrooom - first time we've decorated since we moved in.

If it makes a difference the colours are dulux muted stone and putting green - a beige and a not particularly dark green.

We've often mixed colours in rooms before but always either as a feature wall for a darker colour or done opposite walls. I don't think this particular green is dark enough for a 'feature wall' however.

My preference is for opposite walls again, or possibly just one feature wall probably behind the bed. However my dh thinks that we should do two 'L shapes' so 2 adjoining walls in beige, then green .I think this sounds aesthetically a bit 'wrong' but can't put my finger on why. Any thoughts?

BTW we def have considered wallpapering, but can't find any paper we both like in the right colour scheme.

I agree with you. L shaped feels odd and opposite only if you want to visually pull opposite walls together.
Can you bring both colours together with curtains and other soft furnishings?

Christmaspumpkinseeds · 01/11/2022 16:12

I wouldnt do Ls but think that stone ia too plain to have on 3 walls.

I just did a green similar to yours on one wall with a very light green on the other 3 walls. It came out well and the room feels very warm.

I wouldn't do L's either. I don't think. Objectively, there's anything wrong with it, but it just wouldn't feel right to me.

They did it on one of these design shows then dressed each corner very differently for different purposes, it was very much 2 rooms in one. Quite effective. However it would mess with my brain too much!

On the Dulux site there are other colours I prefer with both of your colours, maybe have a look at those.

I automatically assumed an L shape for this, I think it would work really well.

TomTraubertsBlues · 01/11/2022 17:22

I prefer opposite walls to L shapes. Or, if just doing one wall in a bedroom, I'd do the one behind the bed.

TomTraubertsBlues · 01/11/2022 17:25

Doing one wall doesn't mean that the one wall needs to be super dark or bright though. It doesn't have to be an eye-catching 'feature'.

I did one wall in Pressed Thistle in a bedroom a few years back - that was a muted colour but it looked really good.

I would do L-shape but paint all the wood work on all 4 walls in the same colour throughout - but not white. So in your case, I'd do all windows, doors, skirting board etc. in the green, so that there is some continuity. If there are not many windows/woodwork, you could paint a mirror/picture frame/piece of furniture in the green colour - your bedframe would look good in the green, too. I would then also paint the ceiling in beige, not white, to pull it all together.

3 walls green and 1 wall (behind bed) beige?

ladygindiva · 01/11/2022 20:56

I'm an L shaped fan. My twins share a room , one wanted blue the other pink and so I have an L shaped system with very light pink and very dark navy blue with very light pink furniture against the dark blue walls. I really love it.

Frazzled2207 · 01/11/2022 21:41

Really appreciate these comments thank you. Especially since I asked my colleagues in the office and they thought I should just paint the lot in beige 🥴

I hadn’t considered an L shape. We have a feature wall in most of our rooms. Lounge is little Greene hicks blue which is a dark blue with a very pale grey (mono) on the other 3 walls. Moving shortly and undecided about color schemes and whether to stick with 4 walls same or have a feature wall .

Frankensteinisamonster · 01/11/2022 22:01

Those are very quite bland colours, if it was me I’d do something quite striking if I was going two colours. Make it count. For example keep the stone and go with a lovely dark green - a deep rich 0live or teal.

Yes we would ideally do this but the rook itself is not particularly light which puts us off this. We have had olive green walls before and like them. And have teal in the kitchen!

I agree with your DH (sorry).

I think if it’s a dark room, embrace it, particularly if it’s a bedroom. Our bedroom is quite dark naturally, so I painted it f&b pigeon, it comes up very dark in the room, more like this image, and had dark wood fitted wardrobes and furnishings, it’s lovely, and much better than when it was a lighter colour.

Seconded! I once had a very gloomy kitchen that couldn't be made lighter, so I painted it dark blue and ran a stainless steel rail all round the ceiling to hang implements from. It was fabulous.

I'm about to start painting a very large lounge-diner and was planning to do an L shape so the lounge area embraces the dark (north-facing with a conservatory blocking light too) with a warm teal with gold/brushed brass wall lights then do the other lounge walls and the dining area in a warmer something - not sure what yet, maybe white with some blush tones. Now second-guessing after everyone saying don't do an L Confused

If you are wanting a statement wallpaper to contrast your walls, Victory Colours have some gorgeous options. we recently decorated our alcove wall with milana graphite.
