Moving from flat to house - do we need stairgate for 3 year old?

Just that, really - our 3yo is used to living on one floor only. When we get into new house, I worry that he will wander out of his room at night and fall down the stairs if we don't put a gate up. Am I being ridiculous? Is it actually more dangerous to put a gate there, which he is likely tall and strong enough to climb over (although admittedly not in his sleep)?

For info the top of the stairs is a pretty narrow (maybe 70cm) and one side of it is wooden slatted banister post, so I might struggle to screw a door in there anyway.

If we don't put a stairgate up, is there anything we can do to minimise chance of him stumbling down narrow staircase while he is half-asleep?

Suggestions welcome!

*at the top of our old house's stairs, that should have read. 🙄

When DC 1 and 2 learnt to climb out of their cots at 6am we put a stair gate at the top of the stairs to corral them and left juice cups and raisins in their bedroom as a delaying tactic.

I would put a gate on his bedroom door, rather than at the top of the stairs.

This was my suggestion too. Then if he does climb over it, he will only fall a few feet to the ground not down the stairs.

Op he's 3 I wouldn't waste your money. A couple of months and you'd be taking it down again. Or if you really think you want one go second hand.

But the stair looks safe enough to me.

The stairs look safe enough to me. A little landing nightlight for visibility, maybe, and reiterating the rules of stairs: go slow, hold the banister, etc. Don’t put a prison gate on his bedroom!

Those stairs don’t look dangerous, I’m not sure you could even fall down them beyond the first step because it’s so wide and then has the turn. Also you’re probably looking at a tricky and expensive solution for the rounded post. If you’re really worried and it’ll keep you up at night and you could do his room just initially until you’re sure he’s confident on the stairs and knows the layout of the house.
