Tell me about your bathroom projects

We’re about to renovate our bathroom using a company that has sent us a quote and lots of things are optional extras. What was worthwhile adding to your bathroom? What should we avoid.
Please tell me the good bad and the ugly as we have no idea and are not diy minded

We had a built in toothbrush charger too.
I have an independent light in the bathroom with a pull cord that isn't as bright as the main light. It's lovely when I'm having a slow morning or relaxing evening.

We had a niche put into the bath/shower wall for shampoo bottles and other bits, and will definitely do this in our new house. We also moved the switch to the wall just outside the bathroom. Pull cords are not a thing in the country I’m from so I’ve always found them annoying and kind of icky (why are they always nylon or fabric cords that are impossible to keep looking clean?).

Wall hung loo. Cabinet with built in toothbrush charger and sensor for very soft light-handy in middle of the night. And unless you’re having underfloor heating, LVT is warmer than porcelain floor tiles. Reinforced bath if you’re having a shower over. We don’t have massive water pressure so rainhead shower waste of time-if your pressure is very high, go for it.

I once lived in a rental that had everything built
in - toilet brush holder, toothbrush holder etc. When the little cup holder by the sink broke it was a nightmare to replace so I’m a bit hesitant to get accessories built in although it does create that tidy organized look

Large, matt-finish tiles with matching grout for easy cleaning and smooth-looking finish. Grout is an expoxy-resin thingy which is tougher and keeps its colour. We paid extra to have the tile edges mitred where need be, so there's no chrome trim anywhere.

A niche built in to the shower wall for storage (its an over the bath shower - not a fixed rainfall showerhead, an adjustable one - people of different heights use the shower, more flexible). Our space is small and we were fussy about lining up edges and creating symmetries wherever we could. Somehow this makes it more restful. Sorry, I know that sounds rather picky and obsessive.

A wall hung sink with a shelf beneath. The toothbrush charger is fitted underneath the sink so the charger and toothbrushes can live on that shelf rather than on the side of the sink. I like clear space and surfaces. Shelving above the hot water tank cupboard for extra stuff.

The lighting is a combination of ceiling spots and wall lights either side of the mirror. We have a dimmer switch so you can have it bright or soft according to mood, time of day, etc. No extractor fan, we hate the noise. It's a small room with a large window, and that does the job of airing it.

Yes we have large Matt stone tiles too-in a small space it avoids looking busy. We half tiled because of the dimensions-didn’t want fully tiled in tiny room as too oppressive.

OP what kind of flooring are you getting? I need to replace a small bathroom floor on a small budget and don't want to go too cheap, if you know what I mean?

Yellowcanary22 · 06/11/2022 09:34

@BadAmbassador i am just using the ones the company recommended. Lugano I think they’re called. I just chose the colour.
thanks to a previous post recommendation I’m now going for the biggest size because our bathroom is tiny and I don’t want it to look busy

Following this. Some great ideas. We are buying a house with an en-suite where they have removed the shower and installed a freestanding bath. It’s fabulous but DH never has a bath so I’m looking at ways we could add a shower bath in (it can’t go over the bath due to where the bath is situated

We’re getting an overhead shower but can choose between 3 sizes. I’m concerned about the big one because we live in a hard water area and it will be harder to clean but my heart says yes shower like you’re in the rainforest. Pressure depends on time of day because we’re in an apartment and it’s weak when everyone else is showering but during quiet hours the pressure is amazing
