Is this the going rate for painting a room???

I've just moved house, into a very nice area, which I absolutely love.

Handyman company came to visit to provide me with a quote to paint my living room, dimensions as attached. Ceilings are approximately 8ft high, it's a 1930's solid semi.

He quoted me £1,250 plus VAT, so £1,500 in total plus the cost of the paint. F&B £94 for 5 litres he said, so most likely another £200 on top. He said it would take 2 days maximum.

I honestly thought painting a room would cost £500-600 for labour, plus materials. Am I out of touch, or is this the going rate? I've now got another few companies coming to quote, as I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Does the quote sound reasonable or completely bonkers? Location is West London suburb, if that makes a difference.

Thats madness. Can't you take a few days leave and do it yourself?

MarshaMelrose · 28/10/2022 22:30

I'd do it myself, then pay myself, then go shopping on my wages.

LulooLemon · 28/10/2022 22:32

He's taking the mick.

There's generally a shortage of labourers, he knows this and is pushing his luck.

Painting really is not difficult. Get yourself some dust sheets and a shower cap and have a go yourself.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/10/2022 22:33

Suspect he doesn’t really want the job, so has deliberately priced himself out of it.?

Tootlingalong · 28/10/2022 22:34

Sounds completely bonkers to me. Does it include all the gloss work, coving and ceiling or just walls?

Latetothetable · 28/10/2022 22:35

This is too much! Paid £600 for bigger, talker room on SW London in May.

Flowerfairy101 · 28/10/2022 22:35

Im pretty sure we were quoted £1300 plus paint for 3 rooms similar sizes to yours! Is there much prep to be done? I would (and did) just do it yourself.

Starseeking · 28/10/2022 22:39

It's a relief to hear others think £1,700 (including paint) is too much to paint a living room of this size, I thought perhaps I didn't have a clue about prices, and would need to rethink the other refurbishment works I plan to do.

I'n not able to paint this room or any other rooms myself, as I'm a single mum working FT, so any spare time I get, I spend as leisure time with my 2 DC under 6 (one of whom has additional needs). If I took time off work while they are at school, I'd use it to sleep as I'm permanently knackered!

Are they removing wall paper first?

Starseeking · 28/10/2022 22:45

There's barely any prep to do, although a few holes to fill left by previous owner taking down pictures. I'm really painting to my colour preference and freshening up the room before my new sofas arrive, so I can have at least one nicely finished room.

I've attached a cropped picture of the room quality, no wallpaper to strip, it's actually already painted, just a few years ago with obvious wear and tear marks on the walls. Ceilings and covings will be done in All White.

We moved to our house about 8 years ago . We were quoted £6000 for four bedroom. I am still looking at the crappy finish in two rooms TBH …definitely shop around.

MightyOaks · 28/10/2022 22:49

I'm paying a decorator £150 to paint an entire 13ft x 13ft room on Monday (already have the paint) 😵‍💫😵😵‍💫😵

Nannyamc · 28/10/2022 22:49

A few days you could do it yourself..way out of cost.
200...makeup.

Starseeking · 28/10/2022 22:51

This was the rest of the quote for other rooms in the house, front room is the largest room of all:

Downstairs front room
Prepare all walls ceiling and woodwork
Prime undercoat woodwork and finish in brilliant white
Finish ceiling in white
Walls is colours chosen by you
Labour and all materials £1250+vat = £1,500

Front bedroom
As above
£1150+vat = £1,380
Box room
As above
£645+vat = £774
Back bedroom
As above
£995+vat = £1,194

If you want farrow & ball or little green the xtra cost will be added

Thank goodness I didn't ask about hallways and stairs 🙈🙈🙈

We pay our trades guys £200 each per day so 2 guys one room 1 day..

Would be £400 and £800 max is it needed prep.. this is south east.

sydenhamhiller · 28/10/2022 22:53

I feel for you.

We recently got a quote for £5000 to paint living room, small study, hallway/ stairs landing of big standard semi detached. Walls and gloss woodwork. Not including paint.

DH and I do a terrible job - I am
too slow, he is too slapdash - but we’re willing to live with our terrible
DIY at that price!!

Meandyouandyouandme · 28/10/2022 22:58

He’s on £625 a day for painting! I’d only work one day a week at that money Shock far too much even in London surely, but prices are mad at the moment.

OhSunnyMorning · 28/10/2022 22:59

No they are either trying to take advantage or do not want the work.

We paid £300 inclusive of paint for 1 room of a smiliar size. It took a day.

If they revise the quote down tell them to foxtrot oscar for trying it on.

Butterfly44 · 28/10/2022 23:02

Bonkers!!! Paid 160 day rate for a painter in central London. Not including the paint. Found via gumtree. Did good job.

AuntieDickhead · 28/10/2022 23:03

Blimey. I bloody love decorating. Looks like I need a new career! I'll only need to work a couple of days per week.

user1497787065 · 28/10/2022 23:20

I think the quote is reasonable but would expect the job to take longer.

I paid about £2300 including VAT to have a large bedroom, a dressing room, bathroom and a box room painted earlier and his year.

This took almost two weeks.

YorkshireTeaCup · 28/10/2022 23:22

We are SW London and have been quoted £5.5k ex paint for all prep + prime (mist coats) + final coats for loft bedroom, loft ensuite, 3 middle bedrooms, main bathroom, both sets of stairs, landings and hallway. Walls, woodwork and ceilings. So think yours is way off.

We are also going for johnstones colour matched to F&B, which is saving a bit as well as being able to get a scrubble version for the toddler's sticky fingers! 🤣

PimmsOfCourse · 28/10/2022 23:27

They probably don't want the job if they are quoting that kind of price

Justgivemewine · 28/10/2022 23:29

Get more than one quote so you can compare.

weve had quotes for various thing, as a pp said sometimes you get ridiculous quotes its obvious they dont really want the job. If all quotes are similar then that’s probably the going rate.
