Corner Sofa for small narrow living space.

Asvan · 27/10/2022 18:38

Hi everyone,

We have recently converted our garage into a living space. The room measures 2.5m x 4.5m.

I want to get a corner sofa into the room. The sofa will be up against the wall that measures 4.5m and I want it to cover as much of that wall as possible to maximise seating space.

I have been to look for sofas but i cant seem to find any that are thin and narrow in depth. Most of the bigger ones are too bulky and will take up too much room.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a corner sofa that's narrow in depth but can provide maximum seating?

I look forward to your replies.

Thanks.

do you really want a corner sofa? it sounds like it will take up too much of the room and make it feel small. I recently stayed in a rental with a small narrow corner sofa and it was horrible to sit on.

how about building in a bench seat with lots of cushions?

Separate sofa and matching footstool might provide more flexibility

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 27/10/2022 22:10

I found one on eBay (new) for spare room / play room. It's not the type I'd have in my main living room but it fit the necessary measurements.
I'll be converting garage also but will go for a regular but very comfy sofa bed from Snug or Loaf.

I sawa tip on a design site that really helped me.

When you do find a sofa, make a template out of newspaper. I was going to have an Ikea corner sofa here, but the template helped me see that it was too deep, took up most of the floor space.

@Asvan You say you want the sofa to cover most of the 4.5m wall - that's one very long sofa.

We almost bought a vintage 4m sofa (not a corner) on eBay a while back, but even looking at new I think it would be quite difficult to find something that was a) close to 4.5m b) a corner style and c) not too deep but not too skinny either!

Unless you can find something modular where you can add sections till you've got the size you want and then the ones I've seen tend towards chunkiness, I think a long sofa with separate footstool(s) might be your best option.

I've had the same problem. The narrowest I've found is 85cm depth from Swyft. (Model 01 or 02) I have ordered one but not yet unpackaged. It's described as a corner sofa but is actually a footstool/ottoman pushed up to a three seater.
I have been advised by people that a corner sofa gives more seating in a small space; although I guess this is subjective.
Good luck with whatever you find! I can let you know what I think of mine when it's built! They do have some of them in John Lewis that you can try out.

Don't look for one that will fill that entire length - with a long thin room you need to zone it. If it's for a playroom for example a corner sofa at one end, against the longer wall opposite a tv, with a play table at the other end would work.

We have a similar proportion room as it goes and had a dwell corner sofa at one end, and small table and chairs for crafts/colouring/games at the other end.

LubaLuca · 27/10/2022 23:02

They do give more seating in the space, but it's not the best way to sit in my experience. Okay for two people so they can both get their feet up, but not good for a family to be lined up with someone wedged between two others in the corner. A smaller (regular depth) sofa and a couple of small armchairs would be preferable for most families I think.

Asvan · 27/10/2022 23:15

Thanks everyone. We already have a living space but this will be more a snug for when we and DH want to chill etc. I'm really in a dilemma about what to go for now. If anyone has a room with similar proportions I would live to see pics for ideas of layout.

Could you draw a rough diagram of where the other features of the room are?
Door, window, radiator even plug sockets

Subbaxeo · 28/10/2022 09:11

I would zone the room. A proper corner sofa at one end(rather than a chaise) with rug and tv, then the other part of the room make a small office space with desk or perhaps a reading corner with a couple of small armchairs around a bookcase and rug, or craft corner… Sofa.com aren’t cheap but very good quality-we have the Aissa which also comes in a modular form so you can adjust the proportions. Their Isaac is also compact. Zoning will mitigate the narrowness of your room.

titchy · 28/10/2022 09:39

This is mine. I'm standing at the end with a 1.2m wide desk on my right and shelving unit next to me. Not sure of dimensions but similar to yours.

You can get a modular one from e.g.nabru.co.uk to fit whatever spa e you have. I have a u-shaped one and it's great, and very cheap compared to others. They are 'self assembly ' but you can pay £50 to have them do it, which I would recommend.

nabru.co.uk I mean

Asvan · 28/10/2022 11:50

So this is my floor plan. Excuse the bad drawing. I want enough seating in the room to seat at least 5 people. I will be having the TV on the door wall. I would like to get a small coffee table and a lamp and large artificial plant into the space as well. All ideas and suggestions welcome.

Our space I think is even skinnier than yours. It's used as office/ quiet reading space. It started off as the first photo which made it feel really narrow. Then I changed it by zoning it as per 2nd photo which works better for me.

I know this isn't what you asked but could you hinge the door the opposite way so it opens against the wall? That will help with the feeling of space. Otherwise by the time you put a sofa on the other wall and walk round the door it might feel squished.

I have one of these but maybe not as long as you'd want. It's not main living room quality but is quite comfy for our other living space. I think the styles with legs help in narrower spaces

There are plenty of L shaped sofas made for static caravans. My DD bought a barely used one for hers, it is free standing and fits neatly into the corner.

Teaseall · 29/10/2022 13:30

@Aswan
How about a layout something like this?
A corner sofa with the chaise bit under the window (with no back so that it doesn't block the radiator, then a small two seater or snuggle chair at the other end. Nest of tables with lamp on between them and a slim bookshelf or display shelves in the corner as you come in the door.
If the tv is going on the wall, you could put a slim line console table under it and either store the coffee table underneath that if that makes sense 😁

We have a snack so far which wasn’t a cheap option at all but I’ve manage to get a sofa bed incorporated plus to 2 lounge chassis at each end, so a five seater but with lots of storage at both ends which just makes it great for guests if you can put the duvet in the pillows at one end and throws and snuggly’s at the other. That might work for you

HiveBee · 29/10/2022 14:05

AutoCorrect apologies it’s a Snug sofa.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 30/10/2022 00:46

@HiveBee pics? I plan to get a Snug or Loaf.....I love how easy the Snug ones are to turn into a bed plus the storage too.

HiveBee · 30/10/2022 09:50

I’m decorating at the moment the hard way with all the furniture in situ and it might be awhile before people to put up the finished article photo but just literally imagine a three seater sofa bed with a chaise at each end. It cost about four grand in total so I’m convinced they probably are cheaper options out there but I lived in a flat at the time when I bought the sofa bed and I live in a Victorian terrace with narrow hallways so it worked well for me

HiveBee · 30/10/2022 09:55

With regards to life so far as I’ve never heard anybody have a good word to say about them with regards to keeping the cushions pumped and in Instagram able condition
