Has anyone had cavity wall insulation done recently?

We're about to move into a house with limited insulation 😫so my first job will be to get quotes for cavity wall insulation. I've had one company say that they are just too busy to quote and wondering whether this means that the price will have rocketed! Also, whether there's a long waiting time Grin

Anyone had it done recently who'd be happy to share how much they paid? TIA

Hopeful bump...

Research the hell out of it first, the house may not need it or if it's done badly you can't go back from it. Another option is to have thermal plasterboard fitted to the inside walls. I'd start with roof insulation, windows and draughty gaps first.

I decided against it as I worried that it might make my house damp.

Instead, I'm currently having the house insulated internally. Every room that has an external wall is having insulation board put behind plasterboard. It's costly, but hopefully warm - like wrapping the house in a thermal blanket

Thanks both. I'm fairly confident that it is ok for this house and some of the newer bits already have it.

Interestingly our current neighbours had internal wall insulation installed which caused horrendous problems with condensation in the loft and water literally dripping through the ceilings!

Yikes! Hope that won't happen for me!

This house had it when we moved in. I must say, our house is lovely and cool in the summer, and warm in the winter, it retains heat really well. We don't have condensation problems in the loft, but there is a lot of air circulation up there, we have "air tiles" and all around airflow in the facias. If you go into the loft in the winter it is absolutely freezing.

Technology changed with cavity wall insulation. The old blown fib

To continue….
Technology changed with cavity wall insulation. The old blown fibre and foam are no longer used. Nowadays it’s polystyrene beads that prevent damp crossing the cavity.
However your external walls need to be in good condition regardless.

I thought it pretty much went out of favour, too many people having problems and getting it taken out is a nightmare.

Well, to update as someone bumped it - we did get it installed and almost a year later are very pleased with it.

We had to wait a while to get it done because they were so busy and while we were waiting there was a cold snap. We started to find areas of wall with damp and mold, it was horrible. This has completely disappeared since we had the cwi installed.

The house feels noticeably warmer and bills are lower than we were anticipating.

What sort of insulation was it in the end? I think we need to get some done.

Reallybadidea · 18/12/2023 14:25

The cavity wall was called instafibre I think. Supposed to be water repellent and we felt they did a very thorough job checking the condition of the walls before they agreed to fit it.

This is reassuring. I'm due to get cavity wall insulation installed in the new year. Would be keen to hear anyone else's experience.
