Recommendations needed for white dulux paints for whole house.

Hi everyone

I live in a 10 year old new build house. The house was magnolia when we purchased it and we have never got round to painting it. After getting so many expensive quotes from decorators I have decided to pain the house myself. I'd like to paint the house fully white but I have the following questions.

  1. My ceiling is currently bright white and I would like to keep it the same. Which matt dulux ceiling paint would be best for this?
  1. I want the walls to be a warm white (not yellow/magnolia). Which matt dulux paint would be best for this?
  1. I want all the woodwork bright white but not sure whether to use gloss or eggshell? I've noticed with my current paint that all the woodwork turned yellow over time.
  1. Should I purchase specialist paints for bathroom and kitchen?
  1. In one of my bathrooms we have some mold on the wall- do I need to prime the bathroom before painting? Or should I just paint over it.
  1. Is it worth paying extra for wipeable paint? Or is that just a gimmick?

Any other hints and tips would be really appreciated as I've not painted in a long time and I am so nervous.

Thanks in advance.

I really like Jasmine White - did my whole house in it. It’s a soft neutral creamy white.

I love white cotton matt paint from Dulux, it was a very calming white and worked well with the light we get - not all whites are equal!
I used it with dulux trade eggshell paint - brilliant white, I don't like the shininess of gloss - It stayed white for the five years I had it before moving.

We used the tough version in some rooms and accidently bought the normal stuff for a spare room - you could tell the difference if I'm honest, it was easy to wipe marks off of the wall and it was easy to work with.

I'm planning to do the same in my new house.

I had mould once, I used a mould killer on the area, then cleaned it thoroughly and painted using an anti-mould paint? Make sure the walls are fully dry when you paint. You might get better advice on this - it was a while ago!

I've always used kitchen and bathroom paints otherwise as they are such damp room anything to help stop mould appearing is worth it!

I always paint and decorate my house - I love it. Just make sure and take time to prepare properly and make sure coats are fully dry before the next one (I learned those lessons!)

Hope it goes well!

Thanks for the reply guys. Did you get separate paint for the ceiling or did you se the same white that you used on the walls? Thanks.

I've always used the 10litre basic white matt paint for ceilings and undercoats on the walls - b&q or homebase own brands. If the ceiling is already white it shouldn't need too much covering.

7. Is it worth paying extra for wipeable paint? Or is that just a gimmick?

Worth every penny. We bought the wipe clean version and once a year or so I wipe the walls with a damp cloth and most marks come right off! Especially great if you have kids who eat with their hands then walk around touching the walls as they walk past.

Timeless is a creamy white colour.

We've always painted ceiling pure brilliant white even if using another type of white on the walls.

Skidaramink · 24/10/2022 15:25

Yes we used brilliant white on the ceilings which went fine with our Jasmine White walls.

I’d use the same for ceiling and walls. It’s so nice not having to do the cutting-in.

MajesticElephant · 24/10/2022 15:31

I have timeless in the whole house. It’s cream without any grey/yellow/green/red undertones and goes perfectly everywhere. Most of my friends have it now too after they’ve visited my house.

Oh and PBW on ceilings. They are average height so it helps make the room look bigger

Daftasabroom · 24/10/2022 15:31

Dulux trade matt white is very slightly warm. If you want paint to do we everything nothing comes close.

Thanks everyone. Some more advice needed plz- what's the best filler for small hairline cracks?

CellophaneFlower · 25/10/2022 14:20

I really like Toupret interior filler. I generally rake out the cracks first as they always seem to come back otherwise.

For ceilings I like zinsser perma-white. It's not that cheap, but great to use in bathrooms or anywhere mould may be an issue.

I agree with some other posters that White Cotton is great. Jasmine White is a touch warmer. Rock salt is white but on the really cool side.

CellophaneFlower · 25/10/2022 14:22

Oh and definitely get the scrubbable! Whoever owned my house didn't and every time I wipe the walls down the paint comes off!
