Am I being stupid or are my new windows the wrong size?

Halfway through getting windows swapped out and I'm getting more and more suspicious that the fitters have messed up while measuring. I've read online that windows need room for expansion, but two of the ones they've installed in the cellar have got a gap of 5cm or more round the outside (see photo) they've filled with expanding foam, and it's visible from the outside of the house too, surely that's not right?! They're back Monday to finish the job so I want to be prepared to sound like I know what I'm talking about!

I have no experience or know-how but damn, that can't be right?!

tupperwaretowers · 23/10/2022 16:48

What are the other 3 gaps like?

stuntbubbles · 23/10/2022 16:51

That doesn’t seem right. We had all our windows in our last house swapped and the gap was nothing like that, though there was obviously some wiggle room. Which the fitters covered with trim.

This happened to a neighbour of ours. The tradesperson had taken out the old windows, measured the holes then bought and fitted the nearest size of ready-mades , filling in the larger gaps with bits of wood and injected foam etc.

.
When our windows were replaced, the exact measurements for each new window was separately listed on the contract. It then took several weeks for all the windows to be made to measure.

Exact fit makes a big difference to heat retention and soundproofing inside the building.

I mean they often fill the small gaps with foam for a snug fit but no way is that right.

We’ve had new windows fitted in two different houses and they fit right up to the external brickwork & the internal plaster. No foam ever visible.

Don’t accept them saying they will cover it with a PVC trim either. I’m betting they will offer to.

I've just had glass doors fitted and there's millimetres, not centimetres, between them and the frame.
Were these supposed to be custom?

SquashMinus · 23/10/2022 16:58

Thanks for all the responses, that was my exact thought process too; I'm not a window expert but this CAN'T be right.

To answer the questions; this is what the top and both sides look like, the bottom seems to fit normally with just a tiny bit of foam. They're supposed to be custom fit (the guy came out and surveyed and measured) and we've waited a fair old while for them to be made up too!

Our new windows are like that but once they are boarded out they look perfect. I will try and get pics as one of them isn't boarded yet.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/10/2022 17:05

Here is the one with foam not boarded and one boarded and taped/plastered.

Doesn't look safe to me. When we moved into our current house DC used to sit on the windowill to look out at the street, from their new bedroom. We kept saying not to.
About 6 months in, we had the windows replaced by a firm we'd used before and the one they took out of DC's room was held in with foam, like yours in the photo. Our window guys said stuff about "cowboys" and "dangerous".

Are the company you're using a member of any trade guild? I'd be contacting the guild if so and asking about standards.

CottonSock · 23/10/2022 17:25

Not sure from photo, but I remember I wondered why the hell mine didn't fit, but then they added the finishing bit and all was fine.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/10/2022 17:34

They don't just use foam to fix them in place. They add the foam after the have been fixed in. We have an architect and a builder working with us on our house. I think both of them would have picked up if this was dodgy work by the window fitters. The architect noticed one was in at slightly the wrong height and had them remove it and replace it correctly. He is a stickler for detail.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 23/10/2022 17:37

Asked my other half as he has fitted windows and says it can depend what the outside is like. I presume if its a better fit outside then you can cover the inside with plaster and trim.

TopSecretSquirrel · 23/10/2022 17:37

Look at them from the outside. Are the gaps smaller? That part should fit neatly with less foam/trim and then the inner wall is made good more with foam.

Diyextension · 23/10/2022 17:38

What do they look like from the outside ?
