Thermostat query

We've got a piece of shit Salus thermostat which is broken and stupid and can you tell that I'm really cross about it? Freezing Victorian house, tiny baby, etc etc etc.

So we need to replace it. We've got a Worcester Bosch Greenstar boiler and we don't need a smart thermostat like Hive or anything, but I don't know where to start choosing a replacement. We've been recommended Drayton, but which one??

Bump. It's cold here.

We've got a Worcester Bosch boiler with a Honeywell thermostat plus TRV's. I reccommend Honeywell.

MolliciousIntent · 21/10/2022 13:54

Thank you! Do you know which one?

It depends what you want. Do you want to be able to set different times throughout the day over the full 7 days or do you just want the same on and off times every day of the week.

MolliciousIntent · 21/10/2022 14:01

To be honest I think the same times for weekdays and then slightly different ones for the weekend.

We've got a Worcester Digistat with our Worcester boiler. Works well, may be an older model?

Comefromaway · 21/10/2022 14:02

Also how many off on times per day do you want. Ours does up to 6 but you can get cheaper ones that do say 3.

Crazymadchickenlady · 21/10/2022 14:06

WE have the Honeywell CM727 that Pigletjohn recommended on here. Works really well as long as you change the battery every now and then!

MolliciousIntent · 21/10/2022 14:13

@pigletjohn can I flag this one for you?

Our radiators all have the Drayton TVR4s thermostat controls on them. Plus we have a general NEST thermostat . Highly recommend both of these.

GiantKitten · 21/10/2022 14:38

You don’t need a smart thermostat, but we have Hive and I love it, it’s much more useful than our old traditional wall mounted one (eats batteries though).
I love being able to turn heat on/off when out, and you can move the thing around to find the best home for it temperature-wise.
One of the settings is “boost” where you can turn heating on temporarily in 30-min increments.
(Also in a cold draughty Victorian house. Our previous boiler was a Greenstar but had a Vaillant installed this year.)

Is it a wired one, on the wall?

Salus are not very good.

Honeywell and Drayton are

I am not keen on wireless ones as they go wrong more often.

At the moment we have a wireless Salus which is shit (as are their customer service team).

I'm assuming because it's wireless we'll struggle to change to ine on the wall?

Not had any issues with our Hive not connecting.

I love being able to set the thermostats remotely.

We used to bicker a bit about who should run down stairs to adjust the thermostat on particularly cold days.

Those days are long gone, I'm glad to say.

PigletJohn · 21/10/2022 15:57

The 727 is wired, so would not suit you, though I'm very happy with mine, and is discontinued now, as is the 927. I believe the wireless replacement is the T3R. I am not up to date with the market now, you may do better with someone more active. I'm thinking Hannah Colubus but I haven't got the name right.

PigletJohn · 21/10/2022 16:12

Here we are

@hannahcolobus

What would you suggest?

perenniallymessy · 21/10/2022 16:32

I know you said that you don't want a Hive or Nest, but we love our Hive. So convenient to be able to boost the heating before you leave the cold and rainy football pitch so that it's warm when you get home.

And if you forget to turn the heating off when you leave on holiday you can just do it from your phone.

Definitely worth having IMO

MarianneVos · 21/10/2022 18:47

I've had wireless ones for ages and they've lasted really well. The last one did ten years.

This discussion seems to be about timers rather than thermostats, are they combined?

Programmable thermostats can turn the heating on and off to various temperatures of your choice, usually according to the day and time you decide.

For example, you might set it to: Monday to Friday, temp up to 18 degrees at 7am, off (down) at 9am, on (up) to 18 degrees at 5pm, down to 15 degrees at 11pm for overnight.

Except Wednesday (half day at work), come on early at 1pm

Saturday, (get up late) up to 18 at 9am, continue all day until midnight.

June to September, off for 120 days (heat not needed during Summer)

5th Feb, off for 13 days (auto restart the day we come back from hols) (holiday setting)

1st Jan, extend evening heating for 4 hours extra (party night setting)

"Off" is actually "down" to a frost protection setting, might be 10 degrees or something, so it will come on if necessary.

You can override time or temp whenever you want.

We've got a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 and this wireless thermostat.

This is the newer Honeywell which looks pretty good, though I have not used one

livewell.honeywellhome.com/ga/heating/t3r-7-day-programmable-wireless-thermostat/

If you see a controller with "Service Interval" or "Service Timer" avoid it. It is designed to stop your system working properly after 12 months to force you to get it serviced.

Jarstastic · 22/10/2022 10:33

I loved my Honeywell wireless thermostat. Lasted 10 years before went blurry and replaced with the more modern version. Have moved and there is a Honeywell wireless here but will probably move to nest or hive.

Comefromaway · 22/10/2022 10:59

Mine is the CM927

JustOrderADoor · 22/10/2022 12:42

Comefromaway · 22/10/2022 10:59

Mine is the CM927

@Comefromaway mine is too & I really like it, but about 3 years ago it started playing up losing the display (well known fault) so I did 'the fix' and it worked, for over a year each time, but it's a bit of a faff. I looked at buying a new one, but they no longer make them & looked at eBay etc, plenty for sale but no guarantee they don't have the same fault (mine is fine some days so I could easily take a photo & say 'it's fine' to sell it)

so I looked at getting Honeywell's replacement, but then thought I might as well get the full 'kit' with the TRV's.....so I can remotely adjust each radiator.

I hate hive (just had nightmares with it at a house I looked after) but it might have been badly set up as other like it, it's just put me off!

someone on here recommended Tado, so I've looked at that & a few others... still not decided what I'm doing, but need to get it sorted or faff about with the monitor again! 🤦🏻‍♀️
