Are extended bungalows bad?

I am furious. My son is buying his first house and it is a beautiful property. It used to be a bungalow but they have massively extended it but all the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms have sloped ceilings as it was a conversion of the bungalow's loft. I didn't think this was an issue as the house is truly beautiful and spacious. However my brother has decided to berate him for it and has made comments suggesting I should have advised him against buying such a property and that we know nothing about investments etc etc

So what if the rooms have sloped ceilings ?! Does it affect long term property price?

Brilliant line @JudgeRindersMinder 😂 love it!

When we looked for our new property we looked at a few like this and were put off by sloping ceilings as we couldn't have wardrobes in the upstairs rooms so maybe that's where he's coming from. Not sure he's going about it the right way though, he sounds v rude.

We have large wardrobes/ storage built into the eves in the main bedroom and in two of the bedrooms a regular sized wardrobe fits in no problem.

donttellmehesalive · 21/10/2022 06:29

I wouldn't buy a house with sloping ceilings or any amount of exterior flat roof, but then I'm sure lots of people wouldn't like my house. Luckily, people are allowed to have different tastes and opinions so I wouldn't be furious i'd just ignore.

MrsIan · 21/10/2022 09:29

@donttellmehesalive agreed, everyone has different tastes. The price was on the lower end probably due to the ceilings but he was happy with it so why should it matter eh!

@KnottyKnitting thank you ,I'm going to suggest fitted wardrobes to him to utilise the space too!

I can see why a dormer bungalow with a high proportion of timber frame is different to a house with the same rooms but it will be priced accordingly. It might annoy me if the ceilings are all really low upstairs though.

I live in an extended dormer bungalow and I love it! Heaps of living space downstairs, massive plot and 3 good sized bedrooms and a bathroom in the upstairs. Yes the flat roof will need replacing more often than a pitched roof but it’s only a small area.

8misskitty8 · 21/10/2022 12:27

A wardrobe company or a good joiner can create wardrobe/drawers from any space, so not an issue.
if the sloping ceilings are a bit low then he could apply for permission for a dorma.

Im near Edinburgh and a whole area is made up of large bungalows and many have had attic conversions. They don’t stay on the market long and go for over asking.

Its none of your brothers business unless he is paying money towards the purchase.

MrsIan · 21/10/2022 15:06

Forgive my ignorance @Flagshitstore ...what's the difference again? Is a dormer bungalow classes as one and half storey and has timber frames on show? I think his is sold as a two storey house as it's fully extended upwards...or is it the same thing? Ceilings aren't low thankfully !

@8misskitty8 thank you. He was going to get get a quote from Hammonds

Essentially all upstairs bedrooms have this on both sides...but I was going to suggest the space along it become a fitted wardrobe area like you've all kindly suggested!

We have sloping ceilings and veluxes in the bathroom and on the landing (converted bungalow). I haven't always been keen on that, but I actually like the look of it, it makes it more interesting. I wouoldn;t like a bedroom without a normal window, though.
We also had a flat roofed single storey extension- just an extension to one room, it felt very low ceiling-ed. Have just put a pitch on it, inside ceiling goes up into the pitch, and it now has veluxes. It's looking very nice now (still have to insulate, plaster and decorate though). Thing is- ceilings can often be altered if you don't like them.

Thank you @BlueMongoose thats helpful!

We've just bought a run of IKEA children's wardrobes to fit a 1.7 m tall bit of wall at the base of a slope. It looks amazing, lots of interior accessories and can fit a full adult hanger for depth.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 22/10/2022 14:04

Bungalows (extended or not) go for a premium round here (south east)

Expelliarmus88 · 22/10/2022 15:19

@ToniAlto is there any chance you could link it here or tell me what its called?

"@DrMarciaFieldstone thank you! SE here too!

Sounds like a dream property for a first time buyer!

i have sloped ceilings upstairs and adore my house. It’s hardly unusual in this country. I’d highly recommend Hammonds fitted wardrobes, pricey but ours are about 10 years old but still look like new. Don’t accept the first quote though!

brother’s definitely well jel 😉

crazy4cats · 22/10/2022 23:30

we've just bought a dormer house / bungalow - it was built this way rather than being extended. We got such good value for money for the square footage - a regular house of the same size would have been minimum 50k more (probably more like 70-90k - money we don't have!)

I must admit the whilst the master bedroom is a brilliant size the 2 smaller rooms do feel a bit small with the sloping ceilings and will need some creative furniture arrangements / solutions - but we are still in the process of decorating and getting things how we want so I know eventually the rooms will look and feel great. we have a massive downstairs area which more than makes up for the bedrooms - afterall, we spend most of our time downstairs and there is a playroom which can double up as a homework / hangout room once DC is older, so the fact they have a small bedroom deosn't really matter

ToniAlto · 29/10/2022 16:36

@Expelliarmus88 We thought IKEA Smastad was excellent. We also used Busange with it's rounded corners as a freestanding unit.
Go and see them in the shop. They look better in real life and with various upper and lower combinations with or without feet, you'll get close to 'fitted'.
I think the key thing is to be sure you can get a full sized adult hanger in.
