We are buying a house in the kitchen has the floor pictured. It is some sort of solid tile that's been sealed/glazed. I think the glaze was applied afterwards because even the grout appears sealed.

I personally hate it but the wife loves it. We intend to keep the kitchen as is for now and paint the cabinets (solid pine), paint the walls, re-tile. Changing the floor will be costly at this point so I guess I'm going to have to learn to love it. 😬

Questions:

What kind of tiles are they? Is there a name so I can Google it and get some inspiration?

Can the glaze be easily removed? I think them being more matte and having some patina might help.

Do you hate it too? I think it looks dated and anything we do the kitchen to spruce it up will be overshadowed by that floor...

I'm not a fan of the kitchen either - BUT you can remove the sealant (an alkaline-based stripper should do it) and reseal with a matt finish, which would make it look much more muted. There's a bunch of videos/guides on the internet which will show you how. Much scrubbing is involved!

That and painted cupboards and it wll be quite nice - I think it's just all a bit orange at the mo!
