Moved house, no landline

Needing some advice please.

Moved house last week. Plugged my telephones into the jacks - nothing. Tried every jack in the house - nothing. Found the master socket - Openreach 5c - and plugged into that - nothing again! On the advice of my phone provider, I removed the faceplace cover (Openreach MK 4) and plugged directly into the inside socket. Success, finally! Landline and internet now working.

I guessing this means the fault lies with my wiring. Or is it a case of replacing the faceplate? The old faceplate just clips on, there is no wiring attached to it (is that even right?).

Really appreciate any help with this. The master socket is in the loft and it's annoying keep hearing the phone ringing up there (I've got cordless, but even so).

Well miffed about this. The previous owner must have known.

It’s quite possible that the internal workings of the socket have pushed back inside a bit too far, or the plate stands a little too proud or, your cable connector is a fraction too short - any of which would mean you have a bad connection until that minuscule difference is removed. Hence, when you took the cover plate off, a connection was made.

In fairness to the previous owner, maybe the didn’t know it didn’t work.

I have no clue if my current house is capable of a landline connection tbh. I don’t think I’ve even seen a landline phone in years.

Also the previous owner may not have used it. We haven’t ever used the set up
left bu the previous owner - most likely will be ripped out over the next phase of decorating.

@ManyMaybes Sorry cross post!

I doubt the previous owner knew, I haven't used a landline in years. We removed all the sockets in this house when we moved in.. along with the tv aerial which felt a bit wrong but we don't need it.

The faceplace was hanging off and the clips were broken, which makes me think it's been on and off a few times. I'll order a new faceplace and see what happens.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt - as I've spent the last week having filthy carpets washed and wiping black grime off the inside of windows, it's probably clouding my feelings towards them!

I haven't used a landline in our last 2 houses, one of which we bought and sold, wouldn't have a clue if it worked! I don't think many people use landlines these days?

We use a landline. As it's still on copper, it still works during power cuts. This is one of the main reasons, as we have frail relatives who may need us in an emergency. With power cuts in the offing this winter, if I didn't have a copper-based landline, I'd be being extra careful to keep the mobiles charged.
Eventually we'll all be forced to come off our power-independent copper landlines, which I dont like.
