To feel uncomfortable about comments on our bungalow...

So we moved into a detached bungalow
2 years ago. I love living here, our road is wide and we have a field behind us in a semi-rural area.
It's 3 bed with an en-suite off our bedroom and a large living room.
DH and I are both 35 and DD is 3 - what's upset me on a number of occasions is comments from people such as
"Why have you gone for a bungalow!?"
"Isnt that for retired old people?"
"That's a funny choice for a house"
And many more...

I had no idea until we bought the house people perceived bungalows in such a way, to me it's just a detached house - anyone else out there in the same boat?

People are rude. As someone in a house with a million stairs you have made the right choice, you just need to own it.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 06/10/2022 15:13

People are weird. It sounds like a lovely bungalow. Just ignore them. The same people are happy to live on one floor in fancy apartments surrounded by neighbours.
A bungalow is just a detached apartment IMO.

Sandrine1982 · 06/10/2022 15:14

I've finally understood what a bungalow is !!! 😂

WingBingo · 06/10/2022 15:15

I live in a bungalow and I love it

feels safer having everyone on the same floor, especially young children

RiderOfTheBlue · 06/10/2022 15:15

We moved to a three bed bungalow last year. I've not had any comments from people in real life but have seen various comments on here that suggest we're selfish for buying a bungalow when we're neither old nor disabled.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 06/10/2022 15:15

They are envious you have no stairs to vacuum...

KirstenBlest · 06/10/2022 15:17

Tell them it's a nightmare. So annoying having no stairs to carry the vacuum cleaner up.

EndlessMagpies · 06/10/2022 15:19

I could quite happily rock a bungalow.

Housebuyingfamily · 06/10/2022 15:23

They are typically for elderly people who have difficulty using the stairs.

MintJulia · 06/10/2022 15:24

They're badly out of step. Bungalows are like hens' teeth where I live. They attract more buyers than two storey houses precisely because people can raise their families there AND carry on living there when less mobile in later life. They also normally have quite large gardens.

Well done for being so far sighted. Ignore your silly friends.

Heyahun · 06/10/2022 15:24

Not a bungalow but we bought a flat and get similar. Constantly being asked when we will move to a house. It’s rude op and I’d bloody love to live in a bungalow!

I love Having no stairs no fear of my child’s falling down them

momtoboys · 06/10/2022 15:26

I am unclear...is your bungalow on one floor? If so, you are the smart ones and will not have to move to a one floor place when you are older. They are just jealous.

Fattybumbah · 06/10/2022 15:28

In Australia they’re called houses….

I love bungalows - who on earth would want stairs.

a spacious bungalow on a plot of land - it truly perplexed me why people wouldn’t want that. It’s such a good set up for a good lifestyle

No shit Sherlock.

🙄

Mistywindow · 06/10/2022 15:29

I’ve got a bungalow, same age as you. I love it!

Although you know we’re not allowed to live here as they’re only for old people who can’t manage stairs. Which we will be one day.

LakeIsle48 · 06/10/2022 15:31

I'd flippin love a bungalow!

And?

Been in a bungalow for years.

Now we are older, guess what? We dont need to move from a house to a bungalow.

Because we are already in one!

PurplRainDancer · 06/10/2022 15:32

Uncomfortable? How bizarre 🙄

boogieboogie · 06/10/2022 15:34

I'm so glad I wrote this post and you lovely lot have cheered me up!

I have to say I think people have a habit of trying to pick a fault in something to make themselves feel better!!

What's a bungalow that isn't on one floor? 😅

People are rude. We live in a flat and have had people make very rude comments. Unless they are paying your mortgage its got nothing to do with them.

Lovesacake · 06/10/2022 15:37

Thing that puts me off bungalows is I like sleeping with my bedroom window open but on the ground floor I’d worry about intruders…what do all you bungalow dwellers do in a heatwave?

Jellybean23 · 06/10/2022 15:38

Maybe a bungalow isn't first choice for a majority of people your age because they tend to be expensive compared to houses of similar square footage.

But if you intend to stay long term in a bungalow, use stairs outside your home as much as possible to avoid 'bungalow legs'.

ILoveShula · 06/10/2022 15:39

@boogieboogie , a dormer

A dormer bungalow! Most of it is on the ground floor but there is a bedroom
or 2 upstairs in what looks like a loft conversion but was actually built that way.
