Warm air ducted system and asbestos

We are buying a house and have had a survey which has noted that it has an old warm air ducted system, which tend to contain asbestos.

It does also have gas central heating, so the system would not be in use, but does this need to be removed, or is it fine to just leave it where it is and (I'm guessing) cover the vents?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Asbestos is fine as long as it isn't disturbed.

Obviously if you did decide to have the flue removed then you would need to get in the specialists.

Worth considering how much space would be released if you did get rid of the WAH.

We had it in our old house (oil fired) and it was removed back in 1989.
The space it was taking up was considerable and with it gone we were able to re-fit the kitchen and have a full height larder unit where the old boiler had been located.
Also, with the (vertical) flue removed it gave us a larger 1st floor airing cupboard and meant that the loft could be fully utilised without the flue running straight through the tallest (and most usable) space.

We bought a house with warm air heating, then came the warnings,I freaked out, rang the asbestos helpline, they said to paint the boiler cupboard door with emulsion, leave it alone unless it's flaking. There are 3 types. We have artex ceilings, some contain asbestos, you would have to scrape some off to send for testing. It's painted over with ceiling emulsion. We also have a small internal vent....like a mini chimney flu, goes up the cavity wall into the loft and roof. Used to be a gas fire, it's completely intact, and we aren't touching it. My DS housing association flat, they've just blocked the vents, and left all the metal duncting.
