Will this look ok? Paint colours

I am hoping to convert a smallish spare bedroom up in the eaves into an office. Currently all white.

I'd like to paint the walls this shade of blue www.edwardbulmerpaint.co.uk/product/natural-paint/aerial-tint/

keep the ceiling white (including the slopes up to the ceiling, so quite a lot of white)

then do the skirting board and fitted wardrobe in a darker blue

www.edwardbulmerpaint.co.uk/product/natural-paint/navy-blue/

I realise that the dark colours won't make it look bigger- I'm aiming for cosy as at the moment it's a bit too dark. Any thoughts welcome? Are dark skirting boards a bit old hat now?

Sorry, that should say "it's a bit too stark" not "dark".

Ah. I was wondering how you though painting it grey/blue from white woukd make it look less dark!! 😂😂

personally the colours look like baby blue & plum to me. So they're not colours I'd choose. (I've ordered the sample card though)

I think I would (as you've said) leave the ceiling & slope white, does it have a gable end? I'd look at painting that a warm pink or warm light grey adding cosy with soft furnishings.

I like a mid/dark blue, but I think you need to be careful to get a warm one & they can make a room seem smaller.

personally I wouldn't paint the shirting a colour next to the white, but maybe in an attic room the same colour under the colour of the wall. I'd be painting a wardrobe lighter not darker.

but that's just me 💁🏻‍♀️

Ah to me they are duck egg and navy- I'd better get some samples! Thank you for your thoughts.

I love Edward Bulmer colours though I've never used them I've had some samples and they are lovely paint.

I do like the colours and they do look light blue and dark blue to me but I wouldn't paint the ceiling white as it will really highlight where the ceiling is low. I'd paint the ceiling in the same wall colour and then it will blur the lines between them.

Personally, I think the green tones in the duck egg might not work super well with the slightly purple tones of the darker colour.

I agree. I like both colours a lot but I'm not sure if they quite work together but it may be different in real life.

I just finished painting my ds and dd rooms in Arial Tint and it looks lovely!! Really cozy and calm, lovely chalky finish! As we have dark floorboards, I went for white skirting, white ceiling, all other woodwork white. I think if I did navy skirtingboard, I would make sure all woodwork is navy, so door frame, door, window frame, firesurround - whatever there is, in navy, too. I would also then wonder what to do with the ceiling, as if you leave that white it might stand out and spoil the effect. You could paint that Arial Blue, too, or if you really want a moody effect, navy blue. Otherwise, you could do a white ceiling and Arial Blue skirting boards, and then white window and door, but still a cozy effect!

All the Edward Bulmer tones work very well together, they are mixed with very few ingredients and intended to decorate huge country piles, so that you can walk from the 'green' room through the 'Red room' into the 'yellow morning room' and nothing Jarre or clashes 😀

Both paints look quite grey to me, so not sure it will give you the cosyness you are after? But seeing other people's comers I wonder if the colour on my phone is off?
What shape are the walls? If it is a low ceiling, I think you'd be better doing some white and some colour, but not make a colour change on a low wall.

Personally, I hate dark woodwork, so I wouldn't do it. If you like it, go for it.

NellyBarney · 04/10/2022 12:44

Oh yes, personally, I don't like white slopes eaves. I would always consider them wall, not ceiling, and painting them the same colour as the wall will make the room look bigger and higher. If you choose to paint the slopes the same colour as the ceiling, you make a feature out of them and make the room look smaller and lower. So you could be brave and paint the ceiling and slopes dark to make the room a romantic bolthole - or a middle ground is to pull the wall colour up onto the ceiling for a cocooning but not claustrophobic effect.

bravotango · 04/10/2022 13:40

Personally I would paint the walls and slopes the lighter duck egg colour, and leave the skirting/woodwork white! If the 'walls' are low, having a distinct line will only draw your eye to the top of them instead of the ceiling. We have paint our walls, sloping walls and ceiling in F&B Calke Green in our loft and it's lovely and cosy!

This is how Aerila Tint (100%) turned out in my ds bedroom. It's a pretty dark room.

It's definitely not duck egg, more a grayish blue.

LuciaPopp · 04/10/2022 15:18

Oh that looks lovely @NellyBarney

Thanks, everyone. I hadn't thought of painting the slopes but that actually might look better.
