Getting stains out of granite?

We have light granite and on installation the builder assured me it didn't need sealing. I remain unconvinced.

Over the last few months two months two stains have appeared - one on a windowstill where I can't recall putting anything other than a plant pot, and one on the splashback on the opposite side of the job from where we do most of our cooking.

I'm assuming they are fat stains as they haven't dried out as water stains do, and feel very smooth compared to the granite around them.

Keen to try tried and tested removal methods as I don't want to risk making them worse.

Thanks in advance.

I've not had granite but I used to have quartz and always used barkeepers friend powder on stains!

Yup, Barkeepers’ Friend is the shit. Apparently laundry powder and gentle rubbing into the stain also works if you don’t have any, but BK is generally pretty easy to find and inexpensive.

And I would always seal any porous work surface as an added precaution: but your fitter is correct in the sense that it isn’t “supposed” to be necessary.

Granite needs to be sealed it’s an easy job. It’d just a clear liquid you put on and leave to dry.

Watching with interest. I have crystal snow granite, never sealed and horrendously stained around cooker. I’ve been told Lithofin Oil-Ex is the best thing to use but it’s quite pricey and I have a lot of stained granite so holding off in case someone has a cheaper way.
apparently a paste of baking soda and water left to dry draws out fat stains but did nothing for me!

I have a light polished granite. It’s ultra hard and never sealed. Not a single mark on it. It’s not porous. I doubt these are granites suitable for work tops. Mine is bomb proof! I used to have granite in another kitchen and no issues at all.

Yes, granite/quartz need sealing (I know this because it’s part of my job) You can fix it, if needs be stains can be lightly sanded out and then it can be sealed. It will be a bloody messy, dusty job though!
Properly sealed granite does not stain, unless you go bananas with turmeric/leave red wine over night etc.

Granite is porous. All granite. You don’t get different types for work surfaces. Granite is granite. All granite needs sealing.
