Heating for older people

We often have my parents over, they are in their 80s, the house is now stone cold and I know this will be uncomfortable for them.

Either we switch off all radiators bar living room (currently the heating is just off) or I could get the hot water bottles and blankets out which they will loath (as they don’t see themselves as elderly and infirm), any other thoughts on this?

Tone fair I don’t see them as elderly and infirm either but they do get cold.

Definitely put heating on.

it’s not going to cost that much surely for a few hours heating 1-2 rooms. You can offer blankets as well

gogohmm · 29/09/2022 12:36

Switching off most of the radiators doesn't really save much because the main cost is the boiler which is the same for 1 or 8 radiators (plus the heat circulating around the house means you need it on less time). I would say a compromise is in order - some heat plus they wear woolly jumpers plus a blanket over legs

It’s a lot Cheaper run one radio than it is 8
as the boiler is only heating to water in one radiator and the pipes.

Radiator

This.

The misinformation out there is insane.

Of course it’s way cheaper running one radiator than 8.

We have 22 radiators total. On one heating system. Half are in attached holiday let. When the rental isn’t occupied we shut off that side at each radiator and the bills half

Thanks all.

I put the heating on downstairs and my mum really noticed it and was grateful. Thanks again for the thoughts.

We put our set temp up when Mum comes over, as our usual set point is 17 and hers is 23. We also put a fan/convector heater in whatever room she's in, to top up, as getting the entire house to 23 would cost a fortune.

This is just nonsense. It takes less energy to heat fewer rooms

That seems the best way. Dont forget houses benefit from some warmth to help keep the damp at bay. So its a win/win (also gets some washing drying in the other room!)

My boiler was very old Ideal Standard it never gave trouble but cost a fortune to run. I am now getting a new boiler and wondered how many hours or when the boiler should be on or off . I like to wake up to a warm house then basically spend the rest of the day I one room. Is it really worth turning off the heating in rooms not being used
