Boiler dead - Is Piglet John about?

Hoping for a boiler expert - @pigletjohn maybe?

We have a five year old Worcester Bosch boiler which has been working just fine - serviced reasonably regularly....

It suddenly has no power going to it at all.

Things I have checked:

General power in house - fine
Trip switches - fine
Plug fuse - changed just in case.

When we changed the fuse, it powered up for about 5 seconds and then went dead again.

Nothing since then.

Before I spend a bazillion pounds - does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Thank you!

Is it still under guarantee?

No - just out....

Seems like a power thing if you’ve changed the fuse and it then went back out, so no power going to it.

Have you checked the boiler for mice damage/loose cable/water leak - basically anything that will make the electric shoe and blow the fuse. Might be as simple
as the plug wiring needs adjusting (if it’s an accessible old style plug)
fingers crossed for a simple fix.

If it's just outside a five year guarantee then you should potentially still be ok under consumer rights legislation for 6 years (I THINK it might only be 5 in Scotland though). It's reasonable that a boiler will work longer than 5 years. You would have to show the fault was a manufacturing fault.

Visually - I can't find anything wrong with it. Plug is wired ok, no evidence of mice chewing through cables, no dampness around it. The fact that it powered on for 5 seconds when i changed the fuse makes me worry because it suggests more than just a switch accidently knocked or a loose wire in the plug.

I hate stuff like this. I am really happy to try to fix things/watch Youtube tutorials etc but no power at all is a really difficult starting point!

There is an electrical fault in the boiler or one of the things attached to it. Sometimes this is due to a water leak dripping onto an electrical part, usually in the boiler but possibly the pump or thermostat or in the airing cupboard. Sometimes a nail through a cable in a wall.

Do not change the fuse again as it will supply power to the fault and may cause damage.

Then it might be something on circuit board. - which means a visit from a plumber and a replacement part these days.
circuit boards so corrode and fail.

The five second delay might be while it gets ready to fure up or start the fan or pump.

The speed a fuse blows is also faster the greater the current through it, but five seconds is unusual.

Hurray for @PigletJohn thank you for finding this thread.

So sounds like I need to call someone out. I don't think I can fix this - but at least I don't now feel like an idiot. Thank you.

Is warranty definitely up? We got one installed in 2020 and it has a 12-year warranty as it was installed and registered by our accredited fitter.
