When to turn on electric AGA?

We installed an electric AGA during Covid times, which has proved very useful to keep the ground floor nice and warm, as well as being a decent kitchen mainstay.

During the Summer, we switch it off to conserve electricity - just using the standalone gas hob and oven.

The last few nights have been a pit parky and my OH is keen to switch it back on to maintain a consistent level of heat in the house, but I am concerned about wasting electricity

To all electric AGA owners - when do you plan to switch your oven on?

Don’t you have central heating?
What is the energy use of an aga? 2kwh and it’s going to cost 70p an hour to run!

I turned my 30 amp 2 oven aga on just over a week ago as we rely on it to warm up the ground floor but trying not to put the heating on for as long as possible.

what type of aga do you have? Mine is on 24/7 but heats up at night using economy 7. If you have a modern aga with ovens and hot plates that can be turned on and off as required then you have more control.

Never!

We’ve an electric one (installed by previous owners as solid fuel & later converted to electric by them). As we don’t have solar panels then how can I justify the cost & emissions? I don’t need my downstairs to be heated when Im out the house or asleep upstairs. I do have a wood burner which warms the room & heat spreads through to take the chill off elsewhere, for when central heating isn’t needed, but would otherwise be nippy.

I grew up with a Rayburn in the kitchen, and whilst they were lovely in their day, those days have gone.

In terms of the model, it is an AGA Dual Control DC5.

Does that make a difference?

We have quite a large kitchen, and I will admit that downstairs is toasty warm in the morning, and all day

If you can afford it, then put it on whenever you like. You paid more than many spend on a car to buy it, so you better use it if you can. Depending on number of ovens it's currently about 40 to 60 pounds/week to run it. If you live in a period property, the constant warmth will help control damp, mould and rot, so from a building maintenance point of view it's certainly helpful and might save money for repairs longterm if you can afford the initial running costs.
