Tiny kitchen design - would you go for more worktop space or bigger fridge/freezer

Teeny tiny kitchen (smaller than 2x2.5m) and essentially need to pick between having a tall fridge/freezer or worktop space. If we had a full heigh fridge freezer, the only worktop space would be above one cupboard and the adjacent corner (well and beside the sink but that would be draining board as no dishwasher). Only two of us, unlikely to have kids here. I am thinking a bigger fridge freezer is the best option but mindful we have very little worktop space and would then need to consider perhaps the microwave being wall mounted/in top cupboards to free up space.

@Yewtown when you had the oven in the corner, did you have to do anything special to ensure the range hood was in the right place? And what did the cabinets overhead look like?

this thread has been so handy OP as I’m having the exact same challenge. The corner oven option is genius and we hadn’t thought about it, but we’re trying to figure out what it is like in practice

Our builders built a false wall from plywood to create a rigid fixing point for the extractor. We had a 5 ring hob so it created quite a bit of extra space. The oven was separate but a combined hob and oven would work as well. It was great for cooking as there was space either side.

Move the door to the middle of the wall. It will cost nothing compared to the cost of a fitted kitchen and will give you the opportunity for a run of base units under the window, or even to move the sink and washing machine round the corner ( though that may be more expensive).
Otherwise have under counter fridge and freezer under the window away from the oven and then you can have worktop on both sides of the hob.

I guess you have to think about how much space you like to use when prepping, and balance it against how much booze food you like to keep in ready either cool or frozen.

Having said that, I'm just ordering one of those over-sink drainers...

With wall C having a very low window if you loved the doorway then it could look amazing with just a run of worktop along it.

ChubbyBroccoli · 26/09/2022 14:38

Might sound a bit drastic but you could get a 2-ring hob and also ditch the oven in favour of a combi microwave.

Could you get a piece of worktop/large chopping board etc which you could then fix a couple of batons to so that they would sit over your cooker? We did this with two large chopping boards from Ikea at our caravan because we wanted the large fridge/freezer rather than the worktop space.

Random suggestions - theres’s not enough detail on your plan to see if they would work.

Move position of door into next room so you can get your units in a u shape or
Move the door to it swings out into the adjacent room or
change the way the door hangs so you can use the space currently wasted or
fit a pocket or sliding door to create more space.

Build a tall narrow full height unit to the right of the window - you can get units that are 400 or 450mm and you seem to have 460ish. That would take a lot of food storage.

Your main issue is that you are trying to fit everything onto 2 walls in a L shape . You need to find some way of using at least some part of the empty two walls. If you do this then DONT have wall units on all 3 walls.

If you have the ceiling height then use taller wall units so you can have fewer.

Is wall D a load bearing wall ? Whats on the other side of it - living room or hallway ?

Thanks @Yewtown We’ve drawn up a plan but need to talk to builder and kitchen designer now
