Sold house nowhere to live

We have sold our house and all being well should be exchanging/completing soon I hope. We are going to go into rental until we find somewhere to buy but the rental market has gone mad and obviously can't lock anything in until exchange, now worried in case we can't find anywhere suitable that we can afford as apparently about 10 people to every available rental. Thought this would be best option originally but now looking very difficult and scary.

We were in the same situation 2 years ago. We had to widen our net, as in looking in a 1 hour drive radius from kids school, didn't do viewings, just offered over the phone as soon as something came up. Literally on the day before we had to move we got a rental offer confirmed. We had booked a holiday let as a stop gap (but then in the end weren't allowed to go there because of lockdown, but that problem has luckily gone away). Most people I know who recently sold and are looking to buy are staying in AirB&Bs around here (Westcountry).

@Annie1955 similar situation here! I even just started a thread around it

I think our only option will be air bnb but I've been told they're not to that secure ?!

redboxer321 · 22/09/2022 04:14

I am in exactly the same position. Been awake worrying since 1.35. Think it's going to have to be an airbnb but they are pretty expensive and then there's the worry of it going on and on if my next purchase falls through. I have a dog and renting is pretty much impossible.
Mother has offered us to stay with her but has just been up to visit me and told me more than once what a "mardy cow" I was when I was struggling with a relationship break up.
I think fixing the housing crisis might be cheaper in the long run than dealing with all the mental health problems caused by the housing crisis as well as the poor state of existing housing stock (the main reason I am leaving).

Solidarity everyone. I went through this last month. I had five weeks to find somewhere after exchange before completion and it took me four weeks. Was the most stressful four weeks Looking at Nearly 20 unsuitable properties. What I did to make it better was I had a kind friend who offered me a short-term rental (was very small and would not have been suitable for a full six months) and I lined up a cheap storage unit with a deposit.

It made me feel a lot better whilst I looked for something more suitable

Selling+renting while waiting advice

Which I now realise makes no sense! Blame 3am being a mum to 3 month old brains...

Ohtsd · 22/09/2022 07:36

Could you put your stuff into storage and go into an Airbnb

Annie1955 · 22/09/2022 09:11

Oh that's a shame

We complete next week no where to live so we are renting a caravan in Somerset till we find. All our stuff going in storage

TheNoonBell · 22/09/2022 09:33

We were in a similar situation last year, there were no houses available in the area due to the flooding and as we only had a few weeks to find something we had to be fast. We had pets which made it way worse and ended up paying about 50% more than we should have and paying for 6 months when we only used 3 (got 1 month back in the end). Some problems are much easier when you throw money at them.

If you need something fast:

  • Don't be picky, if it has a roof, heating and enough room to squeeze into, say yes on the spot.
  • Offer to pay the 6 months (minimum rental period) up front.
  • Bribe the lettings agents with beer/wine to find something.
  • Do put stuff in storage, most removal people offer this service, but think about what you might need first!
OhWifey · 22/09/2022 09:46

We had the situation last month and it was so stressful that I became quite unwell. We had sold and our purchase fell through (we had to move so that's why we went ahead with our sale anyway). Then we had not many days to find a rental and there was nothing suitable. Our stuff went into storage and we stayed with friends for two weeks until we found a rental. It was awful but looking back, it's done, in the past and now we can look forward to being in a really good position in the housing market.

MrsTwentyNine · 22/09/2022 10:59

Are air bnbs safe to move in for a few months? I've heard it's dodgy as renters have no rights etc ?

Annie1955 · 22/09/2022 11:24

It's awful that it made you unwell, I hope you feel much better now. The conveyancing process in the UK is enough to make anyone lose their minds.

I'm not actually sure about air bnbs as never used one before so no idea what it entails
