Painting a UPVC door + window black: what products? (pic attached)

Hi there

People who have done this and are happy with the result - can you recommend any products?
Should it be a spray paint or brush paint?
What have you used?

We have no idea where to start...any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Anyone?

I would personally get a professional in to do it - they can give you a guarantee of all works done. I know people who have tried this themselves and it can age and look a mess very quickly. I can't remember the company's name - but when I looked into doing this (I didn't in the end - I opted for new) - some companies will guarantee the work for 10 years.

Sandrine1982 · 21/09/2022 14:58

Oh thanks I will look into it. I wonder how much it would cost to have it done as obviously we're trying to save money at the moment :-)

You need a special paint for UVPC, I was given some by the guy who fitted our new door. It was very smelly, and you need special thinner.

I am pretty experienced at painting and I found this very difficult to use and get on without streaking. I really wouldn’t consider doing this yourself ( especially since you sound a bit new to the job)

secretsecret · 21/09/2022 15:11

Why do it at all if you're trying to save money?

CollieWobble22 · 21/09/2022 15:14

You can get UPVC paint from B&Q but it does scratch easily. I've done it on a window and a door. Looks smart but isn't lasting well.

Is it a hot room? Dark painted upvc will absorb the heat from the sun and heat up the room. Not so bad for one room, but could be an issue if painting a full on conservatory (just including this for any lurkers who may be considering it!)

😊

Hi OP I have been researching painting UPVC window frames and a front door with French Chic Al Fresco paint there is a lot of information on YouTube on how to apply it. I did ask on MN a while back if anyone else had tried it but but didn’t get much response. My UPVC is dark mahogany colour I think painting over white would be easier.

FrustatedAgain · 21/09/2022 15:19

There's this paint called Frenchic and a Facebook group called Frenchic fans where they are always painting upvc doors with it. You should have a look there.

LilyRose88 · 21/09/2022 15:21

A company called Rawlins sell UPVC paint which gives a much better finish than the paint you can buy in B&Q. They sell loads of different colours too. Sorry for the ridiculously long link!

This was on Sophie Robinsons Instagram, Rustoleum do a couple of paints suitable and Frenchchic al fresco.

Xposted with the Frenchchic suggestions.

Lellochip · 21/09/2022 15:36

I wouldn't use Frenchic on uPVC doors, I don't think it's durable enough. Haven't tried windows but I wasn't impressed with it on laminate furniture (so similar in that it's a shiny smooth surface)

I repainted that furniture with Zinsser Allcoat Exterior paint and that's much better. It's recommended for uPVC, self-priming.

A spray gun would give the smoothest finish, and would be quickest sctual painting time, though you'd have to spend a LOT of time taping and covering glass etc. Roller would give a smooth finish on the flat bits but lots of fiddly bits that would need a brush. Brush all over would be the easiest, but wouldn't give a perfect finish. May or may not be a problem for you.

I'd definitely at least get some quotes for a job like this and then can decide if worth getting a pro in?

weddingDecliner · 21/09/2022 15:46

Isn't it likely to devalue the house?
Unless it is a mahogany wood effect (and it isnt) then changing the colour would be a bad mistake

FourOclock · 21/09/2022 16:46

I painted my uPVC front door two years ago with Zinsser All Coat and it's been perfect ever since, not a scratch on it (and it's heavily used including a dog scratching on it to come back in multiple times a day!). I also used a primer, I can't remember the name off the top of my head but I can find out if you'd like the name. Both very easy products to use

fairislecable · 21/09/2022 16:51

I have painted a large UPVC conservatory with Zinsser Allcoat 3 years ago. It is still in good condition no fading etc.

it was so easy to use I then did the guttering and downpipes and also the wooden fascia boards so I would definitely recommend it.

Lellochip · 21/09/2022 17:05

Zinsser have a couple of primers, BIN or Bullseye 123 - think the main difference is oil vs water-based, so 123 is easier to work with & clean up after.

The Allcoat does say it's self-priming, but they also recommend using the 123 on this page - www.zinsseruk.com/howto/paint-plastic-upvc/ so for the sake of an extra coat, probably worth using both?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/09/2022 17:44

We had it done and they first primed it with Crown Trade Grip Extreme Primer and then it was painted with the normal paint you would use for woodwork. That was about five years ago and it's still fine.

Cherubimbum · 21/09/2022 19:08

Based on my experience I wouldn't recommend Frenchic, I found it flakes where water stands and chips quite easily despite prepping correctly. I have also used Zinnser All coat (in black and in Grey - RAL7016 and haven't encountered flaking) You have be careful not to put it on too thickly, thin coats are better. Be aware that both paints recommending doing the painting within a certain outdoor temperature range and as autumn/winter approaches the outdoor temperature will soon be too low

I second this, mate did hers and it looks great.

TulipVictory · 21/09/2022 20:07

I put frenchic on my front door probably about 3.5 years ago now. It looks lovely but this year I've noticed it's going to need another paint

TheCanyon · 21/09/2022 20:09

We did ours with zinsser all coat. Super easy and looks great.

Sandrine1982 · 21/09/2022 21:24

Wow thanks guys. This is all very very useful. I've heard of Zinsser and used a few of their products, so will probably go for that one.

Devaluing the house? I'm not sure. I have a certain idea about what I want and the house is definitely looking better and better with each of my DIY projects ;-)

the picture I posted is actually not our house, but we have the same door, on a very ugly yellow brick kitchen extension.

the next thing I'm doing is ordering the "Brick Age" brick stain and dying the bricks.

... can't wait to finish these two projects and see the result! I'll post the real picture here once it's done. :)

We used this on our doors and windows - it's quite thick so only took 2 coats. We stupidly did it before having a lot of work done outside so the door is quite marked and needs a recoat but on the whole, it looks good. A friend used the same but in grey which looks equally lovely.
