Pets Completion Day

I was wondering what people do with their pets on completion day?

I have a couple of cats and we sold to a FTB and are buying a house with no onward chain .

No idea when we get the keys or what time we have to release the keys to our buyer.

What do people usually do with their pets?

We sent our cat to the cattery for 3 nights as it gave us a chance to pack and unpack with all of the doors and windows open and no worries if him escaping. Easy choice for us though, as he bloody loves it there and they spoil him rotten!!

My dogs just came with on the day.

@Findahouse21 I've never used a cattery before and worried about my elderly cat who's 13.

We might give it a go as it seems like a good idea rather than waiting around outside for the keys to be released to us with the cats accompanying us in their carriers .

I took my cat to a friend's house early in the morning then picked him up after everything was in.

I didnt move very far so for for a few weeks before i took my dog to his new local park then I made sure he had a long walk and light breakfast in the morning then as soon as the boxes were unloaded we went for another walk to his new park.

The ferrets on the other hand were a bit harder to sort out .
There hutch was only small as they were never locked in it and had free run of the very secure garden but the new house didn't have a secure garden so I had yo keep them confined untill there new hutch ( small shed ) was delivered, built and kitted out .
They were NOT happy but it was only for two days.

Do you have a friend that can look after your cats from the day before you move until the day after.

Don't forget to update their details on their Microchips ( presuming they have them of course)

Ugh.
That's reminded me of when we moved to Scotland.
Got sedatives from the vets for the two cats to keep them quiet on the long journey north only to have the car they were in stuck behind the broken down removal van of the people moving in. (Single track Lane)
By the time that was sorted the sedative had worn off, so the journey was noisier than expected (they didn't like travelling in the car)

I brought the three dogs with me to the new house, the weather was good, put them in a large cage outside, walked them every hour.

They were fed and watered, it only lasted about 4 hours until everyone had gone and we could close gates and let them explore, they were fine.

Last time we moved ( 300 mile move) we took them with us in the car, in separate cat carriers. We shut them in the bathroom with all their creature comforts while the furniture arrived ( it being the room no one needed to go in) and they were ok. Both are nervy rescue cats, but they were surprisingly resilient. We'll do the same this move.

I would use a cattery. It's just for two days max. She'll be a bit pissed off (standard cat reaction) but safe.

HappyHolidai · 21/09/2022 08:24

I put mine in his carrier in the bathroom. Let him out briefly (bathroom door closed!) before we set off, for a wee and food/drink.
arriving at new place, put him in the bathroom again in his carrier and let him out once the movers had gone.
He didn't love it but was absolutely fine. And he was safe.

We did exactly this too!

I used catteries many years ago... but that was because I had several neighbours taking over, feeding keeping them indoors, was determined they were not having them. Dogs just came in the car. A funny thing,we had a ginger Tom Tiger, was moving house,he hopped in the car sat on the passenger seat looking out of the window,he'd never done it before, and the double takes from pedestrians was hilarious.

We moved 300 miles north last year and put our cats in the cattery for the night before the big move. We then collected them after the removals left and drove the 8 hours to the new place.

We moved again a couple of months ago, just 10 miles this time. We took the cats to the new house early in the morning and shut them in the bathroom with a big sign on the door saying DO NOT OPEN! Once removals men had left the cats were allowed out to the rest of the house.

Salome61 · 21/09/2022 16:27

I was in rented when I moved. I arranged my removals the day after completion. About 7 am, before the removal men came, I took my 16 year old cat over to the new place and put her in a huge dog crate, in the bathroom, with her bed/water/small cat litter tray. I put a battery radio on in there low and put tape across the door with a big poster saying 'CAT'. I went in a few times to check on her as the removal men were bringing stuff in. I put my elderly dog into kennels for two days.

When the removal men had gone I waited about an hour, then let her out into the spare bedroom with her scratching post etc. I kept her in there for one week, then let her have the full run of the place. I kept her in for a month, and she was quite happy when she went into the tiny garden here, she couldn't jump the six foot fence. After a year I cut a hole in the side gate and she'd go for a pootle around out the front in the evenings. Sadly I've just lost her, I miss her.

How far are you moving? We just kept the cat in and moved him between rooms as the guys loaded the van. If you’re bottom of the chain it shouldn’t take too long once the money starts moving to get your keys. Once in we picked one room to shut him in that didn’t need any furniture going in. We then lost him the next day but that’s another story!!

Defiantlynot41 · 21/09/2022 17:13

Cattery - we did it last year with our 2 15 year old cats.

Took them the day before so they weren't freaked out by the packers

Picked up a couple of days later when enough furniture was around in the right rooms so it felt like "home" to them and we had finished going in and out of doors carrying stuff so we could keep them in ( we moved over 100 miles)

Then just had to manage keeping them in for a few weeks !
