Help me find a door, I'm struggling

We need to replace a vestibule door. The door that was there was an old glazed on andnit got broken so it's gone. We didn't keep the frame, it was so old and dangerous.

Anyway, we need a door 208cm high, 86cm wide and 4cm deep.

We have tried-

Lots of online door retailers
Local joiners
Local salvage yards

I promise I've phoned about 20 local joiners. They are either too busy, can't don't have the facilities to make a full door, don't have space till February.....

We're completely stuck and really desperate to get a new door before the winter.

How can we doctor a door and not make it look ridiculous? Can we add 2cm of wood inside the door frame? We've seen doors, although not many, that are 206cm high. Or would that look bad? I don't suppose anyone apart from us would ever look and notice?

We could add something to the top of the door, but we don't want to paint it so that might look weird?

I've contacted a couple of the big online door retailers to see if they've got anything or can recommend anything.

We'd appreciate any suggestions. Short of becoming a joiner myself which is looking like quite an attractive prospect. Its sk half to find tradespeople round our way right now. Everyone is booked up for months.

It's a pretty big standard 1930s bungalow we live in, there are dozens of them round our way. It's almost like they made a mistake when they built this door. All the others are more obvious sizes.

Hi, OP - have you tried Emerald Doors? They do custom doors. Something like this might work:

Though I can see that the lead time might be an issue.

These guys make bespoke doors www.doorsgalore.co.uk/Internal-Doors/

You could get a standard height door and ask a local joiner to add a wooden strip to either top or bottom. We've done this to most of our doors as previous owners cut the bottom off to fit underlay and carpet, and we went back to floorboards. It took our joiner a couple of hours/door.

Haus1234 · 20/09/2022 22:06

A joiner should be able to add strips of wood to the inside of the door frame fairly easily, so you can fit a more normal sized door?

NellyBarney · 20/09/2022 22:07

Fitting a strip of wood to a standard door should be within anyone's DIY ability after watching some YouTube videos. Alternatively you could maybe screw one of these draught excluder brushes to the bottom and top of a standard door and wait until a joiner has time to do it properly?

NellyBarney · 20/09/2022 22:09

I'd fit it to the door rather than to the frame, though.

this from Todd Doors is about the size you need OP

2083 x 864 x 44mm

I don’t know if this is the style you want but you could ask what other styles they have in this size

minipie · 20/09/2022 22:21

we have Todd doors in our house by the way and the quality is excellent

If you buy a smaller door and add a strip it will show over time due to shrinkage cracking. not the end of the world but better to get bigger and cut down

minipie · 20/09/2022 22:25

this one is a lot cheaper (presumably as it’s an internal door not external) and same dimensions. 1930s style

SmurfetteBlue · 20/09/2022 22:28

I've had doors from www.leaderdoors.co.uk before. They have a section on the menu for bespoke size doors. Might be worth a look

ODFOx · 20/09/2022 23:43

If you have already taken out the frame and lining, then refit with a new lining (backfilled) and a standard metric 2040, 826, 40 door. Then use a wider architrave to cover the excess all the way around if you can't fill it to match.

Rae36 · 21/09/2022 07:40

Todd doors! I've been going for weeks and not found them. That size sounds almost perfect. And not mega expensive. Thank you.

Bespoke cost £££ so it would be great if we didn't have to go down that road.

The joiners we've spoken to have never mentioned adjusting the door frame, they all just want to add strops along the top and bottom of the wrong sized door and I'm really not keen on that.

I'll look at Todd Doors again today and maybe investigate changing the door frame. Becauae that would give us loads more options.

Thank you, it feels a bit more possible now that we might have a new door by Christmas!

You could also try. Geleta doors They do bespoke also along with lots of lovely stained glass ones.

Floweryflora · 21/09/2022 08:20

I’d advise checkatrade, just put your job on and folks will contact you who can do it, you can also check their reviews.

User287264 · 21/09/2022 08:52

Have you used Checkatrade? I always think it sounds a bit dodgy.
