Renovation

We’re looking at a property that we’d want to renovate.

Where to even begin? We’d want to understand what could be done with the property, and how much it would cost.

This is a really daft question but how would we go about this. Which professional would we look to for ideas as to what to do with the property, and for what budget? We’d want something high level for now, just to see whether it would be realistic for us to go ahead.

Arrange to view it with a builder. They have the experience to know what is feasible and should be able to give a vague idea of cost. But costs are going up rapidly ATM so it could be a lot more expensive by the time you complete.

Thank you, we’ll do that. Yes, raw materials and labour costs I can imagine will continue to go up. It’s going to be difficult to be able to know whether the costs and the time will be worth it (it would take 12-18 months I guess?) or whether it’s better just to buy something already done.

There’s very little on the market round here though. I keep hoping for more properties to come on, with it being September I thought more may come to market but it seems dead.

With the current prices I would say it would be much better to buy something already done.

We've bought a renovation property earlier in the summer and the prices for work are so high. We'd have been able to do a lot more a year ago for the same amount!

But we couldn't see anything that was 'already done' that would suit our requirements for location and WFH space so this is where we've ended up!
