Dulux Brilliant White Paint Dried Murky Yellow

We bought some Dulux Brilliant White Matt Emulsion to redecorate our living room, which is already pure white (previously decorated with Farrow & Ball All White). We thought we'd use Dulux as it's a bit cheaper and a brand leader - big mistake! The Dulux "Brilliant White" paint dried an off yellow white - a bit like a giant nicotine stain! We only painted half of the room so we can clearly see the difference between the two paints. We also used brand new brushes. Dulux shouldn't call their paint brilliant white if it's not pure white. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Maybe it's just that batch? Is it Retail or Trade? Was it mixed before use?

I've used PBW Trade multiple times and it's polar white and never got the yellow tinge.

Call Dulux hotline and maybe ask for a voucher?

If it was well mixed and not an old can, sounds like something was wrong with the paint. Take a photo of your wall and return it to the shop for replacement

Get a tester of brilliant white and do some more to check whether it's the batch or not.

It's probably not the batch though, I've heard of people complaining that PBW looks cream.

ChilliBandit · 20/09/2022 08:33

As others have said a bad batch or you didn’t mix it properly. I have PBW on the ceiling of all my rooms which face various directions, it’s not anywhere near cream in any light.

I wonder if it reacted with the farrow and ball paint somehow?

SedentaryCat · 20/09/2022 09:19

Just a thought, but what finish was on the F&B paint? If more powdery you might find that the Dulux absorbs into it and the F&B needed to be sealed/primed before painting. This might give a yellowing effect I guess.

Could, of course, be a faulty batch though. We've just had some decorating done - ceilings in Dulux PBW and no yellowing.

PigletJohn · 20/09/2022 09:43

How long did you stir it for?

This is my thought too.

No issue with our Dulux PBW & all our ceilings & 4 whole rooms are done in it.

When I read your title I thought Murky Yellow was the name of a shade, like Elephant Breath or whatever they're all called.

<helpful input>

ApolloandDaphne · 20/09/2022 17:08

That is so odd. I too wonder if it has reacted with the F&B underneath.

Skiphopbump · 20/09/2022 17:12

I have Diouzier pbw in my hallway where it doesn’t look pure white but a little creamy. I also have it in a bedroom where it looks pure white. For both places I needed multiple coats, it was really poor paint.

hoochyhag · 20/09/2022 17:19

Oh my gosh we painted our kitchen a few weeks ago, brilliant white on ceiling and almond white on the walls, same as before. The paint was really weird and seemed to go onto the wall unmixed, even though we had mixed it well iswim. Used a roller and brushes.
Complained to dulux and, eventually, after sending photos and receipts, got a voucher to buy 2 more cans. But I was really cross. DH has MS and it was really hard for us to do.
It has put me off dulux, even though we have used it elsewhere in the house.
Dodgy batch? Different chemicals used? It's not cheap 🙄

Skiphopbump · 20/09/2022 17:27

I don’t know if it’s clear in the images but the frames and walls are both pure brilliant white (the woodwork is dulux satinwood) and I think there’s a contrast with the walls looking more creamy.

Thank you everyone who has made a comment, I really appreciate your thoughts. We did stir the paint for a couple of minutes and applied the paint very carefully. We contacted Dulux on 19th September and explained what happened, but still haven't had a reply from them.

We've painted half of the room again today with Valspar Contract Matt pbw, it's now dried and it is no better than the Dulux.

Thanks Skiphopbump for your photos: our room looks exactly the same, with our woodwork looking fresh (painted with Dulux brilliant white eggshell) and the walls a different creamy colour.

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts and comments.

Did anyone find an actual white emulsion in the end? Having this problem right now 😕
