How much for a front garden gate?! Am I being ripped off?

Gap measures roughly 50cm x 70cm. I've just been quoted £375 by a trader to source a gate and fit it. I've just looked online and the gate photo he sent me comes to £138 including gate post. So that over £200 for the fitting!! Is that normal? I feel like he's conning me. FWIW, I've left so many messages for fencing people to call me back but they never do. Also, we're in NE London so not sure if these prices are normal.

I was just quoted £500 to fix a wonky gatepost, nothing else - the gate is fine!

Musicalmaestro · 16/09/2022 00:42

It sounds like a small job that he is not bothered about doing. He is quoting for his time etc but still sounds too much to me.

That is shocking

Depends on what's involved in the fitting.

If it's just going to get screwed into the house wall then it's too much, if it's a much more complicated operation it might not be.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 16/09/2022 08:17

We paid around £500 for a tall side gate. Old one removed and new post etc needed and gate obviously included. All waste disposed of. That was a few years ago now pre pandemic. The guy we use is great, reliable and uses good materials etc so he is worth it.

What's the builder's day rate? Around here it's £175-225 so if it's going to take a day to do or not leave enough time for another job then it adds up.

Mindymomo · 16/09/2022 08:24

So, you’ve had one visit, say half an hour £20/£30. Half an hour person sourcing gate, doing estimate and sending it you to £20/£30. Fitting gate will probably take 2 hours plus travelling, say 3 hours and petrol. He the person VAT registered, you will be paying for that. Personally, I doubt you would get anyone cheaper, unless you do it yourself.

Geneticsbunny · 16/09/2022 16:48

£200 is a reasonable day rate for a trades person.

BearPear · 16/09/2022 16:52

My daughter just had a bespoke wooden gate about that size made & fit in an awkward spot - £250. This is in Leeds.

byvirtue · 16/09/2022 17:08

Yes it’s a rip off. Order the gate, post and get some post mix then find a handy man to fit it, should only take a couple of hours max. Much cheaper!

johnd2 · 16/09/2022 17:21

I think you've answered your own question unfortunately.
Most places will only quote for jobs that are worth as much as their other work.
Clearly given most people won't quote they don't think the job is worth doing given the effort.
The only quote available is maybe quoting accurately but it's leaving the decision up to you.
Personally I think it's probably ok based on what you say, but I like the idea of doing it yourself if it's just a screw to the wall job!

l am looking for a small garden gate to make my front garden more secure, on Amazon you can get one from £65.00. l already have the posts, etc there.

EndTheMonacyNow · 16/09/2022 21:03

It might be an easy job to do yourself? Would it be too identifying to post a picture?

DottyLittleRainbow · 16/09/2022 21:13

We paid £700 for supply and fit of a half- height front fence and new gate. This included the old gate and posts being removed too. We are in the SE. So yes I would say that’s a rip off.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 16/09/2022 21:59

Does a hole need digging for post, does post need fixing in concrete, does gate need picking up from supplier, does he need tools ie kango and transformer to dig said hole, does he need a van to bring all said items to your house, does he need liability insurance to cover him in his job overall. If you want a decent job doing you need to pay a decent price. If not watch some you tube videos and do it yourself.

Fitting a pre made gate is barely an hours work.

OP that is a rip off. Ask around for a decent general handyman.

Goawayangryman · 16/09/2022 22:40

I think that's a pretty ok price for London.

Have you factored in the cost of posts, postcrete, and ironmongery like anchors, drill bits, etc?

Having said that would never pay someone to do that when I could do it myself. All you need is some very basic tools and a few hours.

TheLette · 17/09/2022 22:19

Order the gate yourself THEN get quotes - people will be more willing to quote if they know everything is ready to go. A handyman will be much cheaper and should be able to do this job fine. That's what we did.
