Hob or sink on the island?

I'm getting my home renovations done soon and at the planning stage. Wanted your opinions on whether you would get a hob or sink on the island?

I initially thought sink was a no brainier because I needed a splash back for cooking and can't stand a huge extractor fan floating in the middle of the ceiling but I saw a demo for the induction cookers that have built in extractors and was really impressed to how good it was. It doesn't take too much space and does the job. And now I'm thinking am I really going to be cooking and splashing about?! I would rather face the room (open place dining/snug) and watch my kids and cook than have dishes drying all over the island.

I'm interested in your thoughts.

I had my kitchen done and decided on a hob on the island and the sink is looking out of the window (so behind me if that makes sense). It really does seem to work and I am pleased with it

I have sink on the island because 1. It's where the plumbing was originally located before extending out 2. It faces the bi-folds and I like to look outside when washing up

GrazingSheep · 15/09/2022 21:15

Neither.

Marshmallowmountain · 15/09/2022 21:16

I’d go sink on island. I find hobs look a little messy

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 15/09/2022 21:18

Hob.

Dirty saucepans end up in the sink not the hob

abyssofwoah · 15/09/2022 21:18

We have sink on the island and it works well. The island is narrow enough that it would be easy for my young DC to reach out to touch stuff cooking on the hob if they were sitting opposite so that was out for us.

iknowimcoming · 15/09/2022 21:19

Hob hob hob hob hob!

florenceandthemac · 15/09/2022 21:35

Hob as I wouldn't want to look at dirty dishes.
Although I'd go with neither. Would be nice to just have an empty island that can be used for other things

neverenoughchelseaboots · 15/09/2022 21:38

Hob. Otherwise you have stacks of dishes.

NellyBarney · 15/09/2022 21:39

Is the island for sitting on, too? In that scenario, I am personally terrified of a hob, as I am worried about someone pushing over a pot/kettle and falling on children, or small children touching anything. Induction is definitely saver, but the pots/water still get hot. Also things like pasta sauce can spray and burn people sitting on the other side of the hob, at least stain their clothes.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/09/2022 21:42

Neither if you have space elsewhere. It makes them very difficult to change/ remove if you upgrade/ sell your house, and there'll always be splashes of water or tomato sauce all round it! Keep it for sitting round or food prep.

HaggisBurger · 15/09/2022 21:43

Neither. 100%

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 15/09/2022 21:43

I wouldn't have either. But it depends on your layout of everything else really. If either HAS to go there, I'd put the Hob.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/09/2022 21:44

Sink on the island.

mondaytosunday · 15/09/2022 21:45

Hob (neither ideally). Sink is a clutter magnet - even if no actual dishes you have you washing up liquid, sponge, gloves whatever. Unless you are meticulous about putting things away. And where is your dishwasher? Your sink needs to be next to that, which in turn needs to be near where you keep your dinnerware and cutlery.

minipie · 15/09/2022 21:45

Hob. Sink always collects mess.

We have an extractor fitted flush with the ceiling so no lost hob space and nothing hanging down.

Definitely needs to be an induction hob though so it’s easy to clean.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 15/09/2022 21:46

Also, my friends is on the corner if her huge island. Bloody stupid place because it's right where you want I put things going jn/out of the fridge and right where you'd naturally put your hand on the island when looking out to the garden.

really think carefully about what's around it & how you'll use it.

Plantstrees · 15/09/2022 22:13

Neither. Sink definitely needs to be under a window whenever possible and prefer my hob kept away from children. I have a fridge under the end of the island so it is easily accessible to anyone but nobody needs to get in way of me cooking to get to it.

TizerorFizz · 15/09/2022 22:44

There are some hugely outdated views here. We have a very large island. You sit at one end and the hob is some distance away from it. No one can reach out and touch it. Not even a long armed giant. I also have a small prep sink at the other end. It’s opposite the fridges.

My main sink is on a solid wall. I have a dishwasher and I spend little time at this sink. It’s far better for me to look out over the garden from the hob. Also I prep between the hob and the sink and cooking becomes convivial. It’s never convivial at a sink.

If the island is a weeny one, it has limited use anyway. What you have on an island depends on size of kitchen and the island, what the view is snd where people sit. If you separate functions, the hob works well.

redbuttercupcake · 15/09/2022 22:57

Thank you for the response all! It will be a big island and I've had a chat with some people. Apparently hob should be placed slightly in one corner so the seating area is also in a corner (creates a more inclusive space for discussions). I wanted end to end bifold doors and don't like the look of a window on one side and doors on another. Points about it being dangerous for children is something I need to take into consideration. So thank you.

Here is the draft plan

Hob or sink on the island?
OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 16/09/2022 00:24

That’s not a very big island. The working area isn’t much more than 700 mm deep. The hob is right up against the breakfast bar. As a comparison, my island is double width: 1200 mm. It’s 3250 mm long. We have a seating circular table built into one corner. So seating really is separate from the hob. You whole island provably isn’t much more than 2m long and you have more dining options right next to it. You need a lot of circulation space for this layout and all those chairs/stools. They take up very useful space. I would have one dining “table”. Attach it to the island for conviviality.

I would definitely rethink because your use of space is a bit wasteful.

HeddaGarbled · 16/09/2022 00:33

You’ve got a dining table steps away - do you really need a breakfast counter?
