Any paint experts out there? Have I bought the wrong paint for the job??

So I live in an older property, about to decorate a couple of rooms that have already been skimmed and painted many years ago. I thought vinyl free paint would be a good idea on redecorating as it’s breathable, so have just purchased 5 litres colour matched! Been doing a bit of research online and says it’s only suitable for mist/undercoating is this correct?

Oh forgot to say it’s Johnstones contract emulsion!

Is this the paint?

Its this one, colour matched to F&B. The chap in the shop said it would be fine but I’m not so sure now

I'm out of date on the paints right now, but why would you colourmatch a mist coat?
If they do a base to colourmatch into, I'm sure it will be fine as an overcoat.

Nothing wrong with that paint, you’re overthinking this I think. But if it’s old paint you’re going over, deal with any staining or marks with zinser etc before you put the emulsion on.

Sewaccidentprone · 15/09/2022 21:10

Yeah, that one will be fine. I’d def mist coat first though as it’ll make your top coats go on easier.

Minieggmunchies · 15/09/2022 21:23

Thank you and yes definitely prone to overthinking! @Sewaccidentprone did you mean to mist coat over the existing paint? (The wall were painted after it was skimmed some years ago)

Mist coat is only for new plaster as far as I know. If you’re going onto older paint then it’s not necessary.

Sewaccidentprone · 16/09/2022 09:38

Sorry, misread. No, would only need mist coat on new plaster.

Minieggmunchies · 16/09/2022 14:13

Thank you, I guess I’m just concerned it will be difficult to cover in the future because it can be chalky and not very hard wearing

Non vinyl is not as durable, and may come off if vigorously cleaned.

Minieggmunchies · 17/09/2022 07:58

@PigletJohn thank you so much, will the finish on contract be ok or will it be a bit dodgy, I’m not worried about being able to scrub it. I always used clay based paints before for breathability but they are so expensive and thought this might be a cheaper alternative.

House is mid Victorian terrace, the front walls are solid stone would vinyl paint be option? Also can you overpaint contract with vinyl Matt? Arghh totally over thinking this!

I doubt the finish will be dodgy as you put it, it a high quality emulsion. Generally the more Matt the finish is, the more vibrant the colour will be, at least that’s my experience but the trade off is durability and ability to wipe down etc. Slap it on and stop thinking about it, that’s what I reckon Grin

You can overpaint non-vinyl with vinyl (or even acrylic)

It is common in new builds where the new plaster has porous paint to let it dry out, and is repainted later. This is also a good time to deal with any imperfections.

You can use vinyl on the front walls, but if they are damp, you need to find and rectify the fault first (regardless of paint type)
